        Aww, thanks.

        I agree!
Poor Ms. Kim. She NEVER should have asked a genetics question to me…

BOOKSTORES: BORDERS has filed for bankruptcy protection and is liquidating a lot of it’s assets…BARNES&NOBEL is losing $…and here in Dayton, BOOKS&COMPANY’S original store is being converted into a used bookstore(sort of a half-price type place)…that was a great GREAT bookstore–i remember when it was a single storefront place, privately owned, then it kept expanding until it was one of the most successful stores in the midwest…it was bought out by Books-A-Million, and a new HUGE, fancy store was built in town(The Greene, store KH always goes to for signings when in town)…I know it’s only a matter of time before that one closes as well.(Jim Butcher is going to be there this week–i better go and see him, might be my last chance).

TV: WAREHOUSE13(Syfy): I’m so glad the new season started. The two leads are maybe my favorite leads right now on tv(along w/BONES and CASTLE)…just a really fun show. It’s great when Hollywood gets fantasy/SciFi right.

BLOOD WORK by KIM HARRISON: I always try to be honest and give , first, a gut-level reaction to a book/movie/tv review. You know, before the analysis. Did I enjoy it? Was I interested? Engaged? Answer: Yes. It was great to see Ivy and Rachel together working…we don’t get that so much anymore in the series: just the two leads. Now the story: a bit thin and although we get a beginning and middle, we don’t really get a satisfying END to the story. It was a short book…the actual story is really only about 130 pages. It’s not that the art isn’t good…it just doesn’t flow well for me. I’ve read my fair share of comics/GraphicNovels over the years and this book was a bit short in projecting movement…except for the girl’s heaving busoms and flowing hair…the artist was channeling Vargas or maybe Russ Meyer(laugh). He sure loves to draw breasts…R&I certainly got an ‘upgrade’ in that area. Rachel looks like the singer Leona Lewis, or the Beonce character, Foxy Cleopatra, from Austin Powers:Goldmember. OK, I’m exaggerating(laugh) maybe she was using a tanning spell. I’m not one to get hung up on actors/art not meeting my expectations…i don’t care if Tom Cruise issn’t blond enough to play Lestat or Anna Paquin isn’t a size 8 to play Sookie Stackhouse…it’s the story/performance that counts. Still, I know that many are upset about the art not meeting ‘their’ expectations, especially with Kisten. I could care less how Kisten is drawn…i don’t tend to really have an image in mind when it comes to the male characters in the series–they all seem pretty similiar. IWHAT I LIKED: I like that Kisten brags about being Piscarry’s lover! KH doesn’t make that clear in the books and i think there are some readers who have chosen not to confront this aspect of Kisten. So, I loved that it was just put out there…POW! WHAT I DIDN”T LIKE: IVY used the same coy code words/phrases that Rachel normally uses to explain their attraction to each other: “I’m not attracted to HER, I’m attracted to her POWER.” C’mon! That’s weak…surely bi-sexual Ivy kinda notices that Rachel is a babe!(especially with those new big boobs!*grin) Still–I enjoyed the book. The price is awfully steep for such a short book. I would rather the GraphicNovels jump up into the Hollow’s book timelines though…I’d like to be in Ivy’s head when she meets Nick, or sees Skimmer again, or finds out Rachel is dating Kisten, etc. I don’t think the average Hollow’s fan is going to stay interested in First Year Ivy/Rachel…the sad truth is that there isn’t as many of us out here anymore . I’d give it a C+/B-.

    • July 18, 2011 at 5:28 pm

I can’t go back there since I know the way the story is going now. As much as I love Ivy and Rachel, I just don’t want to go there again, so I didn’t get it.

  4. July 17, 2011 at 1:46 pm

So, I just finished watching HP. Now, I’m not a big fan of the franchise, but it was good to finally finish it. 🙂
It had all the good bits from the last bit of the book. I think that after 8 movies the actors are so comfortable with their roles that everything felt pretty seamless.
And, the bits that made me cry in the book made me cry in the movie. It was well done without being melodramatic.
The ending sucked, but then it sucked in the book as well. 🙂 So, all in all – I can highly recommend seeing it – espesually in3D

      July 18, 2011 at 10:07 am

I was really more of a fan with the first few books/movies…it got darker and darker as it went on. Still–i want to see the last one…usually, i wait for the DVD…is the 3D impressive?

      So–is it 27 or 28?(laugh)

Did you ever see AVATAR in 3D? THAT was pretty amazing. I think the key is that they film it in 3D rather than just ‘convert’ it to 3D later(like so many films tried to do this year).

      • July 18, 2011 at 10:27 am

        *laughs* 27. I was born in 1984.

      • July 18, 2011 at 10:30 am

Oh, and no – lol, I didn’t see Avatar in 3D. It was when I was still scraping the financial barrel so I went to the cheapest cinema I could find…

  5. July 16, 2011 at 6:37 pm

Seems we have a birthday next week. Ms Alyssa is turning, what 28? 29? I can barely remember that long ago.

    • Antonio
      July 16, 2011 at 7:12 pm

      27?

    • July 17, 2011 at 1:35 pm

I had thought I was turning 28, but then a friend of mine (who’s 7 days my senior) told me that we’re only turning 27, lol.
So, I almost feel as if I’m not haiving a birthday at all. 🙂

I received BLOOD WORK in mail today! I haven’t had time to read it, but i did leaf through it. Initial impressions:everybody, and I mean EVERY WOMAN IN THE BOOK, is built like a PLAYBOY BUNNY! Even Rachel and Ivy—they both have bodacious racks. (laugh) Not that I’m complaining. Also, Rachel is surprisingly tan–she looks like a light-skinned black girl. Piscarry has grown a foot. These are minor quibbles…i don’t mind the artistic license. It’s the story that counts…i’ll review when i’ve read it.

HEARTLESS by Gail Carriger(4th in Parasol Portectorate series):It’s a ‘talky’ as usual. This series is known for long conversations and slow developing scenes. Not a lot of action per word count(although it picks up towards the end). Of course, our heroine, Alexia Maccon, is over 8 months pregnant when the book begins! So, I think we can understand(grin). I like that the author isn’t afraid to shake things up in her series…she isn’t playing it totally safe at all. Her last book, BLAMELESS, balanced witty word play with action better, I thought. But, still, the series is entertaining as always. I’m wondering if she’ll move the story up a few years in the next book. I would give the book a solid B.

HARRY POTTER–anybody going? I was invited to a midnight screening last night for the final movie in the series, but declined(too late for me).

    be good… 😎

    • July 16, 2011 at 7:31 am

That’s when you realize how much we have come to rely on our A/C and our TV/Radio isn’t it? I’m glad that at least your storms brought us some desperately needed rain.

    • July 16, 2011 at 10:32 am

Gail Carriger is a fascinating (and brilliant) woman. The series often makes more sense if you approach it as sci-fi and not romance. She came out of sci-fi and the romance writers co-opted it (as they have many series of late).

I know the cover model. She runs a steampunk shop out my way.

      • Antonio
        July 16, 2011 at 7:18 pm

Normally I bitch about cover models and cover art…but, in this case originality wins out;you can spot these books out of a crowd from across the room.

I want Alexia to get inside the Royal residence more…converse w/the Queen…get mixed up in Palace intrigue and historical issues of the day…it’s still a ‘must buy’ series for me.

      July 15, 2011 at 10:24 am

woohoo! Did you feel like you were camping? lol. Are there still people without?

      • Antonio
        July 15, 2011 at 3:15 pm

There are still people w/o, yes. As soon as i ‘WooHoo’d’ about my cable and internet coming back on, it went out again for about 6 hours. I think it’s going to come and go for awhile. Luckily, my dad lives very close, so i was able to go over there when it got too hot here, and spent the day/night over my friend, Diana’s, wednesday.

  8. July 13, 2011 at 11:41 pm

    The next best thing?
I have no idea, I’ve actually been thinking about that. With Harry Potter Ending now (finally!!) I think there’s going to be an open market for new fantasy stories.

    • July 13, 2011 at 11:44 pm

The Hobbit is coming out next year, that might open up the lane for a lot of fantasy. Real fantasy. Or… Old fantasy.

  9. July 12, 2011 at 11:54 am

Major storms here in Dayton, Ohio. My electricity, cable, computer have been OUT since last night – 9:20PM – so I’m emailing from my father’s house today. I brought over all my food. His power was out until 3:30AM as well. This morning I searched far and wide for somebody who wasn’t out of ice! There’s a lot of damage around here–my neighbor across the street has two trees uprooted that have fallen on his house! Trees and power lines are down all over(including traffic lights). Many of my neighbors were hit hard. Amazingly, even though I have 4 mature trees close to my house, my house has remained unscathed(knock on wood)….man! I hate not having cable…or air conditioning!

    Hope everybody is doing ok.

    Marsha: still sending out love…

Oh! And I missed the premiere of Warehouse13 and The Closer! Grrrrrr…

      • July 12, 2011 at 4:01 pm

Go to HULU and watch them there. I’m glad that you had no damage. Bob, Sandy and I were feeling sorry for ourselves today so we went down to Tuscaloosa and looked at what is left of the homes and businesses there, two months after that devastating tornado. That made us realize our situation was not nearly as bad as it could have been.

    • July 13, 2011 at 11:39 pm

We’ve had some ‘cold’ wearther for us. The nights are really cold, last night it went down to -4C again. The days are pleasant but beware your extremities if the wind blows…

  10. July 12, 2011 at 12:20 am

    GOOD MORNING everybody!
Did everybody sleep well? I did.
Like the dead. Just thought to put it out there, lol. 😛 I don’t sleep well often.

    How’s everybody doing?
I’ve sort of finished my Mass Effect game. (Did the main missions, now I just have the tiny rabble to sweep up). It is epic, very very nice.
But now I can get back to my life. lol. 🙂

It must have been one of those nights…I had my first full night of sleep last nigth in a week. I feel fantastic today!

  11. July 11, 2011 at 2:38 pm

    Werewolves…

    been thinking about Tony’s question.

Yeah, I think to some extent, Vampires can be your hook, but with Weres, really you need to already have this great, quirky, in-depth character, who *just happens* to be a Were, it can’t so much be the hook as an extra which then makes everything that much more epic..

    Does that make any sense??????

    • July 12, 2011 at 12:02 pm

I’ve been thinking(along w/everyone else) what the ‘next’ big thing is going to be. I don’t know. I think vampires are going to continue to rule the roost, so to speak, contrary to critic’s opinions. Zombies are going to continue to surprise. I think we could see more Fae/Fairy/Elven stories. I think we could possibly see more WITCH stories. We haven’t seen a lot of updated movie/tv treatments of witches and wizards and warlocks and magicians, especially in a historical context. You know, all these historical/litary rewrites w/supernatural characters(ie Abraham Lincoln:Vampire Killer). I think there is a lot of room for a modern take on witches…what do you think? what’s the next big thing?

Marsha–I’m so sorry to hear about your mother. I knew she was sick, but I didn’t know it had gotten so serious so soon. You are fortunate to have had such a close relationship for so long a period of time. My mother passed nearly 9 years ago. You never really get over it, not really. Sending good thoughts and wishes to you and your family…

Thanks guys. I’ve gotten a few hours of sleep and I’m better now. We are going to sit down when our brother gets here and make some plans for the changes that have to come. I went through this when dad passed, and we survived and got stronger. This is will be the same. I appreciate each of you so much. KITTY’S BIG TROUBLE by Carrie Vaughn: Whew! This was NOT a good book in the series(I think it’s 9th). Werewolf series are tough–you need a catch, a hook, to separate yourself. This series had a few: Kitty is the first supernatural that ‘comes out of the supe-closet’ in her world. She’s famous, infamous, the subject of danger and scrutiny by everyone. She’s also has a late-night radio talk show that deals in the supernatural. She later, as a female alpha, takes over her local pack. AND–she falls in love and gets married early in the series(rare in those days for UF). So, the author had a lot to work with. But, after a very promising start, the series has shrugged off these storylines and become kind of pedestrian. I thought she was going to get more and more famous, her showbiz career moving into new areas, and while there was ‘some’ storylines along these lines, for the most part the character doesn’t spend that much time with her radio show anymore and doesn’t seem that famous either. I thought it would have been cool to pursue this more. She also doesn’t do anything with her pack anymore either…she didn’t even change into wolf form in this book and rarely does any of the stories ever have anything to do with wolves at all. Her marriage is DULL, DULL, DULL! Her husband is around to ‘adore’ her, hold her hand, come to her rescue, comfort her, etc…but, they have been in this ‘honeymoon’ stage for about 4-5 books now!? Borinnnnnngggg. This book is getting hammered on amzon’s customer reviews. The author has been very busy with other writing projects in the last year or two and it shows in this book/series(much like Janiene Frost’s latest)…a bare ‘whisp’ of a story ‘puffed up’ into a rambling, dull book. Too mean? I give it a D+/C-.

On to the new Gail Carriger book! 😎

  17. July 8, 2011 at 2:36 pm

    Antonio :
‘Twins’ as in children? Cats? Dogs? Horses?
Do they have same sex marriage in SAfrica? Would you ever get married? Wow, that’s personal–feel free to tell me to mind my own business(grin).

*laughs* that’s fine, we’re all friends here and I’ve known you guys for more than a year now.

no, no we’ll not get married. I’m not the type and OH’s not for marriage (messy family history). Doesn’t mean I don’t want to spend my life with her, but I feel that commitment is more than a piece of paper. So no. LOL. Besides, me in a white dress? Please.

    • July 8, 2011 at 2:38 pm

Oh, but same sex marriage is legal (we have a very cool constitution that gives everybody equal rights) and the babies are human babies. Her brother’s children.

TORCHWOOD–I’ve never seen Torchwood(BBC), but i’ve always heard good things about it…it’s a spin-off from Dr. Who according to the articles i’ve read…it’s about a monster/alien hunting organization from Great Britain. Apparently, the show has moved to the STARZ network and is getting rave reviews(1st episode tonight)…i don’t have Starz network myself…

Reading the CARRIE VAUGHN book right now…why, why, why am i still reading this series? I loved the first few books, but the last few in the Kitty Norville series…not so good…

WEREWOLVES–I think werewolves, out of all the supernatural species, is the hardest to write a series for. What do you think? It’s gotta be hard to write book after book when you are kind of a ‘one-trick-pony’ only limited to turning into the same wolf…plus, it limits the writer in how the character can interact with other characters. The easiest? Hmmmm…I’m guessing VAMPIRES are the easiest to write for in a long-term series…what do you think? Be good!… 😎

Oh! PS–found a funny VBlog on TrueBlood…it’s called CAMPBLOOD, and it’s these two funny gay guys doing reviews of each episode(and other tv shows/films)…here’s their video blog of season4, episode#2:

      http://campblood.org/Newblog/archives/8335

be sure to stay till the end when they use a ‘Grace Jones’ ratings system to grade the episode.(laugh!)

      • July 8, 2011 at 6:10 pm

I used to watch Torchwood on SiFi, but thought it was canceled. The way it ended it seemed that no one was left alive at the end of the final season. I think there was a brief sex scene between the male lead and his boyfriend, but here in the US you don’t see very much of that.

      • July 8, 2011 at 6:33 pm

They are so cute! I loved the video even though I have never seen the series or read the books so they were speaking Greek toi me.

      July 8, 2011 at 1:59 pm

Torchwood is interesting…they had a marathon last weekend on Space. They take an interesting view on the monsters etc. Also the characters are good to. We have Straight, Gay, & Bi characters & this does appear as normal in the show. Also there kissing (didn’t see a sex scene) m/m etc.

    • July 8, 2011 at 6:13 pm

I love werewolves. They are so macho they can get away with those old fashioned “He man” kind of stereotypes.

      • Antonio
        July 8, 2011 at 6:23 pm

Torchwood–from what i understand, the new series takes place in America and takes up after the British season series ending, where almost everyone dies except the Captain and one other person. I think the first episode is available free…online? cable?(shrug)

  19. July 7, 2011 at 2:25 pm

    Hey there everybody,

I’m alive!!! Working myself to death but alive.
I had the coldest two days in my LIFE and that includes the day that I was stuck on a trainstation in the middle of a snowstorm in england.
We had a really cold spell here. Yesterday (as usual) I had to leave at 5am to be at a place at 8am. When I left home it was about -3C, then as I went further west, it went down to -6C! I don’t have aircon in my car and can’t put in the heater because that fogs up my windows. So, I drove in this freezing weather with my window half open and my fans blasting away at my window. I nearly died. I was so cold when I finally stopped for coffee and gas that I couldn’t think.
    Dude, lol. Wow.
Worst bit is I have a cold. my chest is so sore today, I swear I’m getting pneumonia.
    Again.

Ga. Oh. yes, Forgot to say. We’re a set of twins richer on OH’s side of the family.
🙂 It’s sort of cute. When I have the photo uploaded I’ll post OH with the one.

I saw this storm on TV. Wow. It looks like one of our “wall clouds” that harbor tornadoes down here, except no rain and lightening. Is there enough sand in them to damage paint on your cars?

😯 I heard on the radio that this week is ‘National Nude Activity Week.’ I didn’t have anything special planned…maybe run out to the drive in the morning to grab the paper…I could fill the birdbath with fresh water…”Hi Neighbor!”

BURN THE NIGHT by Jocelynn Drake.(6th and final book in ‘Dark Days’ UF series). Jocelynn writes for Harper and Diana Gil is her editor, KH is her mentor and friend…I thought her first book, NIGHTWALKER, was one of the best debut books in an UF series that I’ve read. The lead, Mira, is a fascinating character…a 600-yr-old vampire who can conjure and manipulate fire…hence her nickname, Firestarter. She is one of the world’s most powerful vampires and makes Savannah, Georgia her domain.(although, really, her domain is the entire ‘New World’, i.e. America). So, she isn’t a damsel in distress…she’s a leader who strikes fear into enemies and allies. I always thought this story/character/world would make a great movie, graphic novel, or video game. The series, marketed to Romance Readers, was never really embraced by the reading public. It’s lack of focusing on romance/sex – and it’s dark, violent themes – cost the series readers. The romance doesn’t really kick in until close to the end of the 6 book series. I think that’s a cationary tale for those who want to write UF…there was a day you could stretch out the emphasis on romance unti later in a series, but I don’t think you can anymore. The funny thing is, Fanboys, comic fans, video game enthusiasts, SciFi Geeks – MEN/BOYS – LOVE sexy, tough female characters! But, you have to make an effort in getting their business, speak in their language…Tone down the goofy romance covers, use different marketing tools: animation, audio, art. Not that the Dark Days books were perfect…far from it. But, the books should have been more popular. It seems a waste of a great character. When the books were given a new 3-book extension, after the first 3, you could see a siginificant change in focus w/n pages and even the covers…the covers are embarrassing(look up Pray for Dawn and Wait For Dusk)…the romance was goosed into overdrive in the 5th and 6th books…the 6th book is a jumble as loose ends are tied and put to rest. I can’t fully blame the publisher or author–business is tough. It’s just a shame. Still, it’s going to be interesting to see where Jocelynn(who is VERY talented) is going to go next. I give the book…C+/B-.

    • July 7, 2011 at 1:07 pm

I agree with you Tony that a series has to have a romatic bend to it to make it successfull. I have been doing some searches for on line e-publishers and they seem to be far more willing to take on some non traditional romances. I’ve been trying to get myself motivated to finish at least one of my three stories that are just sitting there. I will never get rich, but just being able to get one published somewhere would do it for me…hell just finishing one would do it for me.

    Happy Birthday To us!(grin)

Got some books in mail and at library: Burn The Night, by Jocelynn Drake(6th and last book in her Dark Days series);Kitty’s Big Trouble, by Carrie Vaughn(I think 9th in Kitty Norville series);Heartless, by Gail Carriger(4th in her Parasol Protectorate series);and Robopocalypse, by Daniel H. Wilson, a new novel that’s been getting a lot of buzz and has already been optioned for a movie by S Spielberg…I’m reading the Jocelynn Drake book first…more on that later.

Movie: saw Whip It(girl rollerderby movie) this week…not great, but good. Reccomend.

TV: having fun with new season of TrueBlood…if you haven’t seen, you NEED to!

    • July 5, 2011 at 12:36 am

I haven’t seen any of the True Bloods. OH and I are still going through Bones. It’s getting better as the season progress, i didn’t like it in the beginning.

    • July 5, 2011 at 1:10 pm

Hey Tony. I have gotten about six chapters into the Harry Dresden book you recommended. I like Harry so far. Is the little police officer a recurring character?

hum, I had to reenter my information to leave a comment.

      • Antonio
        July 5, 2011 at 3:54 pm

Yes–Murphy(all 5 foot of her*grin) is Dresden’s best friend throughout the series…they have some ups and downs and a lot of adventures together as she continues on the police force, helping him when she can, throwing some work his way as well…

Finally got my diagnosis. I have a congenital “uniquness”…well, that’s how Dr Yu put it. I say congenital defect. xD Anyway, it’s an over sensitive nervous system. Basically, everybody has the same symptoms…mine is just more to the extreme. Got a couple more fanifcs in the works. Crush is Star Trek, McCoy/Ryne pairing. Then I’ve got Now That’s A Different Story…which is a Danny Phantom fic…Danny/Vlad. Don’t look at me like that! It’s only logical given D/V is the pairing that introduced me to slash! So. Lizz and I are great. Nothing much else is going on. Oh! Tuesday I start my organic evolution class. Should be fun!

Hey kiddo, been meaning to EMail you…so, now you know–you have a diagnosis. Now you know how to deal with it…that’s a good thing. I’m glad you’re writing…we’ll look forward to that. What’s with all the slash?!(grin) Be good… 😎

Hi Kylie, I was thinking about you the other day, wondering how you were feeling. How do you deal with an over active nervous system anyway? Drugs? If so send some my way, please. My mother’s incapacitation is making me nuts!

        July 4, 2011 at 11:52 pm

How do I deal? I’m supposed to build up muscle tone. Apparently, that’ll help. It’ll never go away, but it should decrease. Drugs, not so much. xD

    Hi guys!!

What a WEEKEND!!! LOL!!! IT ROCKED!!!
I SHOT PEOPLE!!!! You can read about it on my blog, lol. Some friends and I played Paintball. Dude it was so much fun. And, today we went riding and Basjan and I had to help herd cattle. It was great. 🙂
I was shot 14 times. I have so many bruises I can’t sit or sleep or WALK or RIDE without being in pain.
But, it was so much fun. heheheh.

    • July 3, 2011 at 2:42 pm

wOOt!! Shooting is fun. A few years ago my friends and I went to a firing range for target practice. It was police supervised and I hit the bull’s eye 19 out of 20.

I just posted Ashes of Victory, part four. Rylee and David are on a spacecraft to Earth. 🙂

I’ve never done paintball or even fired a gun(BB guns, sure)…I would be the guy who got shot in the face/neck and squeeled like a stuck pig.

      • July 4, 2011 at 2:26 pm

I grew up with guns (and I’m a pretty good shot) because my father had a lot around the house. He felt that he’d rather teach my brother and I to shoot than have us sneak off at some point and try the guns out ourselves. I can shoot practically anything with anything. My eyes buggered me a bit lately (glasses make firing uncomfortable) but I still enjoy target practice.

A few years back, David Letterman had to have heart surgery which left his show in the hands of substitute hosts for awhile…Elvis Costello had been booked as a musical guest months before but was thrust into the role as host, on short notice, when he got to the show(by the way, this helped him get his own show on IFC)…anyhoo–this is one of my favorite songs of all time…

KH has a post about NewYorkCity this morning…I’ve only been once…about 15 years ago…it was great…EXPENSIVE, but great…has anybody else here been to NY? Everybody should go at least once…the subways ARE truly scary(grin)…nothing like a Broadway show, CentralPark is cooler than you think…Metropolitan Museum of Art–you can spend a whole day there…the Empire State building is something–what a view!…Just walking around Times Square or the Upper East Side…nice…

I got to go once with a friend and her parents when I was 13. She and I were not on the street for 15 minutes before a man approached us and asked us if we wanted to “have some fun”. I guess I looked like what I was, an innocent, green country girl in the big city. To tell you how long ago that was, we went to see Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in the bigggest, most beautiful theater I have ever been in.

    Hi guys,

How;s life treating the north? In the south it’s cold, but gratefully so and yours truly broke her tooth. One of the back molars. Right down the middle. The one bit came right out, the other half is still clinging in there for dear life. Now, I have to go to the dentist and I HATE it.
I hate dentists. Absolutely hate them.

    • Jenn
      June 30, 2011 at 6:51 am

That sounds very painful *shudder* I hope you get in to see a dentist today! You may not like them, but I think in this case it is a necessary evil.

    • June 30, 2011 at 6:55 am

Alyssa, just move in with us. I get to have periodontal surgery Aug. 5th. The joys of old age…

      • June 30, 2011 at 2:36 pm

I suspect that’s in my future as well. I have very bad teeth (and i try to take very good care of them). They say it’s because I used a lot of antibiotics when I was younger and now they say it’s because I use a lot of cortesone. They don’t know what they are talking about one way or the other.

Ouch Mud, I’m definitivelyu going to think of you.

Opinions/Advice: Writing a story set in alternate universe and social networking, wireless communication is ubiquitous…trying to come up w/name that doesn’t use ‘web’ or ‘net’…I thought of AComm, or A-Comm, short for Aether Communication…but that sounds very steampunkish, doesn’t it? And this isn’t a steampunk story…ideas? opinions?

What do you think of ‘Zonna’ or ‘Zhonna’ or ‘Zhanna’ for a woman’s name? My main male character is Jakk(might be short for Jakkonen)…trying to think of simple name for main female character(he’s white and ‘basically’ caucasian from one planet, and she is, by our standards, a native girl, a woman of color, from another planet. I don’t want it to sound like an ‘ethnic’ name by our standards, but I don’t feel the need to create crazy alien names either. Jakk and Zhanna? Cool?

    • Jenn
      June 27, 2011 at 12:39 pm

Zhanna is good..but I wouldn’t use Zonna/Zhonna…it sounds too close to nonna…which is a grandma interpretation.

What about W-Comm for wireless communtication?

      • Antonio
        June 28, 2011 at 9:07 am

        Jenn/Alyssa: Hmmmm…W-Comm…maybe Wi-Comm? I’ll have to think some more…I could just invent a word I suppose that’s not so literal…

Another question: I have a character who is a virtual AI–he used to be flesh and blood, but now he sort of lives on as a computer program(he appears as a holographic image at times, speaks through Jakk’s earpiece)…he’s an AI that is now illegal, so I want to define him as a special kind of AI(artificial intelligence)…what do you think of ‘Empath-A.I.’ or ‘Empath’ for short(empathetic)? note: I think I’m calling him Mr. Beadle…Beadle…

      • Jenn
        June 28, 2011 at 11:23 am

        Wi-Comm sounds good.
How about just an abreviation? A.E.I.? If you explain it when you use it the first time, then it’ll be quick for you. Are there more like him?
Oh, I’m with Alyss, I’d like to read it too.

        June 28, 2011 at 12:45 pm

(grin) When I see AEI I want to say ‘AEIOU!’ Yes, he is the only one left(supposedly), they were once relied on heavily in transport and the military…they failed miserably in a war and were blamed and outlawed…actually empathic is the word i was thinking of(not empathetic…i can’t spell)…

    • June 27, 2011 at 1:44 pm

Zhanna and Jakk is cool, I like W-Com as Jenn suggested. 🙂 You’re going to share right Antonio?

    Hi everybody!

How’s the weekend coming along? I’ve had a quiet day. Would’ve had it on my own because OH went to visit a friend. I was looking forward to that, but then I met one of my old waitering friends and I brought her home (I have a feeding gene, I have to feed people, i can’t help myself). So, there went my personal time. But, now I have my time for myself! 😀

Of course, now I haev to clean my room…

About 6 weeks ago I spilled water over my personal laptop (a wonderful beauty of a beast) which shorted out my keyboard. Normally I’d fix something like this myself but I honestly didn’t have the time and energy to try and find a place to order the parts from. So, I handed it in (and they promised me it woudl take 5 working days at the most). I only got it back now. But, I got it back and now I can start enjoying my time online again! My work laptop is SOOO slow.

I’m watching Bones Season 1 at the moment,. I didn’t like it in the beginning, but the characters are growing on me.

    • Antonio
      June 26, 2011 at 8:59 am

That first season has a slow buildup with the booth/bones relationship…it’s argumentative at first as the two butt heads, argue…at some point, the writers/producers must have noticed that the two were more fun, interesting, as the chemistry was self-evident…hey, did you ever catch up on FRINGE?

      • June 26, 2011 at 10:13 am

I was starting too, then my computer died (and I couldn’t get it on my other harddrive through my work computer). So, I’m back to catching up wiht it. I’m rewatching Season 1 just get reaquainted with the series. It’s still the best watching out there in my honest oppinion at the moment.

OH and I also watched Dexter Season 1 and 2. I loved that, though in a deep personal way it upset me a bit. I saw too much of myself in dexter. I’m not saying I’m a serial killer, but Iundersatnd his point of view…

BAYOU MOON by Ilona Andrews(2nd book in Edge series): Written in 3rd person POV, the focus is mainly on two characters, Cerise(Ceri)and William(he was a supporting player in the first book). I’m always a bit disappointed, at first, when a series changes the focus/main characters but often i’m pleasantly surprised. SOmetimes the POV pops into the head of the villian(s), as it does here, which tells a ‘fuller’ story but I always cringe a bit at having to spend time with the villian. But I can’t deny that it’s not necessary and usually adds greatly to the story. I liked William a lot more than i did in the first book–it was refreshing to see a lead male character not be the ‘smooth operator’ that populate most UrbanFantasy novels. Cerise is well done as well–a young daughter thrust into a leadership role with a large family, doing what must be done, lonely, develping a crush on a dangerous stranger. I always complain that writers take the easy way out when it comes to parents and family–characters are usually orphans and never have extended family. Well(laugh) This book makes up for ALL the books where main characters have no family. Cerise’s family is HUGE! It’s like my family! There are dozens of characters and your head will spin trying to remember who is who. I was irritated at first, but I grew to love the family and the interactions of the characters(especially the Lone Wolf, William) with them. But the large cast doesn’t end there: The villians(Spider and his 24 agents, The Hand), the townsfolk, the feuding Sheerlie family…this book has to win ‘The-most-characters-in-a-UrbanFantasy’ award for 2011…HELL! maybe for all time! The villians and the central plot are over-the-top and unnecessarily complicated/convoluted in my opinion, but the entertainment value is very high, the characters are distinctive and relatable. It’s very sad, disturbing in parts…there is a lot of violence and death. I think this book would be much better as a tv series/show or a movie…very vivid world set in the swamps of Louisianna/Edge, so many characters and POVs. I liked it…much better than the usual UF offerings out there right now…still, I wish I loved it but I don’t…it’s just…too much…too sad, too vilent, too many characters, too many ‘odd’ villians…still I would reccomend and I would give it a…B+.

    • June 24, 2011 at 10:05 am

I prefer Kate’s series, but The Edge is growing on me. Very different characters and a very complex world.

I’d give it a B+ or A -. I also like that the alleged villains can become the a very enjoyable main character as your POV changes. Kalder is the hero in the next book.

I also just finished Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy series(every library is going to have them)…Have you read Janiene Frost’s NIght Huntress novels? The first few are terrific–very sexy/violent;not for the faint of heart. I LOVE jim Butcher’s Dresden series…it’s a series that doesn’t hit it’s stride for a few books, then gets better and better. Did you ever read the early Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris or the early Anita Blake books by Laurel K. Hamilton? Carrie Vaughns’s Kitty Norville series–I liked the first few a lot…

Alyss…yes, I know how sore it can be…I broke my pinky knuckle…it gets really stiff & sore sometimes. Even sleeping on it funny will do it. Sending you sympathy.

    • June 24, 2011 at 8:53 am

Yep, still in the editing cave. I am having so much trouble cutting words out of Ella. I also don’t understand what my agent means by more resolution. Does anyone like Middle Grade and have the time to read something quickly?

I should be getting the edits for ID very soon, which is why I want to finish Ella and get it back to my agent. Also starting to get feedback from my first round betas on the super sekrit project–Mud, Marsha, I’ll send it to you second round if you still want it…might need Tony and the “um hm” patrol on this one…but it also might make Tony blush.

I can read MG, if it isn’t 100K. Working on the final and middle edits of LM and dealing with the aftermath of the Breakaway Babes being here. Looking forward to the SUPER SEKRIT PROJECT!

I’ll look at the MG if you want.

      • June 24, 2011 at 3:28 pm

It’s at 59k. She wants it at 53k. I will be perfectly happy with 55/56k. (It was orriginally 72k) Cutting has been a nightmare.

I’d love to read it. No promises on how fast I can read it though, still taking care of work, mom and the zoo!

  46. June 21, 2011 at 5:35 pm

And, we got the series title…

    It’s THE AETHER CHRONICLES

    I like it.

    • Jenn

I like both titles! Especially the series one, it really stands out. I think the readers will find it memorable.

      June 22, 2011 at 9:49 am

Good–that’s what you were hoping for, right?

Have you heard of a book called Retribution Falls by Chris Wooding? I came across it on amazon and the book is blessed with a lot of praise from others(James Rollins, Charlaine Harris–among others) and is described as a ‘Steampunk Firefly.’

      • June 22, 2011 at 12:02 pm

awww, I was going to write a steampunk firefly, lol

        I will check it out.

  47. June 21, 2011 at 1:11 pm

So, got word that my offical title is INNOCENT DARKNESS (we’re dropping “A Steampunk Faorytale” from the title.) No word on a series title yet, but we have three main cover ideas….

    • Antonio
      June 21, 2011 at 1:57 pm

‘Innocent Darkness’…maybe they’ll call it the Innocent Darkness Series as well? I don’t think publishers know what to do with ‘steampunk’ as a term yet–how to market steampunk, I mean.

    • June 22, 2011 at 1:23 pm

      I like that title. 🙂

😆 What up? VAMPIRE ACADEMY by Richelle Mead–finished the 6 book series;very entertaining for a YA heavy on romance. A followup series, called BLOODLINES, comes out in august. SANCTUARY tv show(SyFy)–has been underwhelming this year, to say the least…Boriiiing. Reading BAYOU MOON by ILONA ANDREWS right now(it’s the second in the EDGE series)–story focuses on William from the first book. Too early to tell…TRUEBLOOD countdown: 5 days!!! FISH–Today, one of my motorized filter motors is broken…need to fix that or my remaining fish are going to go belly-up. SUN–it’s been raining a lot lately but my old friend the sun is peeking out today so I better take advantage and get some things done in the yard… Be good! 😎

    • June 21, 2011 at 9:44 am

I just finished Bayou Moon. I didn’t like it as much as the first Edge book, but I did like it very much. They managed to make it different. Looking forward to the next one featuring a character from this one. I wonder how Ilona and Gordon are liking Texas during our heat wave and drought.

When I was young, my favorite musician was Bruce Springsteen. I would listen every night to his music in my room, reading the liner notes/lyrics while listening with giant earphones to block the sound to the rest of the house. Every song was a short story. Clarence Clemons was the saxophonist and main sidekick, and I always wanted to be Bruce Springsteen on stage with Clarence Clemons(‘The Big Man’) at my side. I saw them in person a few times as well. Unfortunately, Clarence died this weekend…as I grow older, many of my childhood heroes are passing on…There’s a lot of great songs to choose from that highlight Clarence, but I really like this video–it shows how important he was to the music and the live performances…

    • June 20, 2011 at 1:45 pm

Oh man. I’m sorry to hear The Big Man didn’t make it. I know he had a massive stroke.

Is anybody ordering BLOOD WORK(the graphic novel) by KH? It’s out in 3 weeks…she hasn’t mentioned it at all in awhile–she seems much more interested in her World Book(which comes out in october)…

    • June 20, 2011 at 1:49 pm

No. I’m afraid I’m done with the Hollows, I’m sad to say.

      • June 20, 2011 at 2:27 pm

I’ll wait for it to come out here. See whether it’s worth buying.
I’m in two minds about it.

      • Antonio
        June 20, 2011 at 6:57 pm

I gotta stick with the Hollows until the end, I’ve made it this far…the first 6 books were my favorites…I would like to read the graphic novel, but it’s kind of pricey right now…I wish my library system had ordered it(they do order graphic novels), but it doesn’t look like they are going to…

    • June 20, 2011 at 8:03 pm

If I didn”t know how the relationship between Ivy and Rachel was going to take a 360 turn, I would love to read the graphic novel and see how that started. Now it just seems like another tease, and I can’t take that anymore.

    Hey guys,
I’m back! Weekend with Other Half. Been very busyh doing nothing the two of us, lol. I’m playing a new game at the moment as well which is keeping me from your loyal side, lol. It’s one of the best games that I’ve ever played. It’s role playing – the trailer shows a male commander shepard, but I play a female one. It’s MUCH better than the male version. The voice actor is AMAZING (Jennifer Hale). The male dude’s sort of. Blah.

    Here’s a trailer.

LOL, I have to ask – did you not see them for months and months afterwards? It is SUCH an amazing game. I’m totally amazed.

  52. June 19, 2011 at 11:40 am

Hey, guys! I’ve been busy but I’m still alive. I’ve been writing some, too. I just posted part one of a sci-fi story, so if you’re in the mood for sci-fi…

Watched THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO last night(Swedish version)…Like the book, it was tough to watch in parts, but it was very good…I wonder how the American version is going to turn out? I wonder if there is going to be any changes? I’ve been reading THE VAMPIRE ACADEMY series(I’m on the last book in the 6 Book series)and although it is a YA, it is very entertaining. Really, the last few books have been adult books in my opinion. Yes, there are parts that make me roll my eyes, but overall, the characters are interesting and likable and the action is exciting. I’d reccomend…Tonight, for a change of pace, I’m watching DINNER FOR SHMUCKS(laugh)…Trueblood countdown: 8 DAYS!!! 😎

    • June 20, 2011 at 6:49 am

I’m sorry but TERRIBLE I think.
I liked the swedish version, that girl was perfect for Lisbeth. I like the movies because it brings out a little bit more than the book if that makes sense. You coudl see that the guy’s a journalist from the way that he wrote. It was good the swedish movie. I watched it with my mum who was very upset by it.

suzanne lazear :Most of the story takes place in the Otherworld — aka, Faerie. Noli is the main character, but books 1 & 2 (and probably 3) have Noli, V’s, and Kevighn’s POVs

I know you had concerns with calling your series ‘Otherworld’ because there are others that use that(sheesh! there are a ton that use ‘bound’ in the title, for that matter), but you can’t copyright titles, especially if you COMBINE it with something…maybe ‘An Aether Otherworld Novel’ or something like that…?

  57. June 16, 2011 at 4:40 pm

Okay, still having series title drama.

The editor is liking things with “bound” in it, like “by magic bound”

    Ideas? He wants a list

    Also, I like Aether Chronicles.

Still going for “dark, mysterious romantic”

I have a feeling the want to use stock images and if we use the cover idea I want, it’s not going to work. ~head desk~ I wish I could draw.

    • June 16, 2011 at 5:11 pm

Can you tell me the basic outline of your story? I mean is it a paranormal romance, is it about weres, vampires, witches?

      • June 16, 2011 at 5:18 pm

It’s a steampunk fairytale for young adults, there is romantic elements,
but it’s not a romance. There are Steampunk and Elfpunk elements and faeries. The concept of being bound in pretty important to the series (like the magic that makes up the Otherworld wants to bind Noli to it, marking Noli as the sacrifice). The magic from the Otherworld leaks into the mortal world (and is what mortals call “aether”), there’s plenty of steampunkery including goggles and flying cars.

      • June 16, 2011 at 5:19 pm

        From goodreads:

Sixteen-year-old Noli Braddock’s hoyden ways land her in an abusive reform school far from home. On mid-summer’s eve she wishes to be anyplace but that dreadful school sending her tubling into the Otherworld. A mysterious man rescues her, only to reveal that she must be sacrificed, otherwise, the entire Otherworld civilization will perish.

    • Jenn
      June 17, 2011 at 7:01 am

      How about:
      Bound on Mid-Summer’s Eve
      Solstice Bound
      A Binding Solstice Wish

      Blood Bound?
      Bound by Blood?
      Sacrificial Magic?

      June 17, 2011 at 9:00 am

If it’s a series title(like Ilona Andrew’s novel series:–‘A Novel of the Edge’ or ‘A Kate Daniel’s Novel’)then you have the choice of ‘Place’ or ‘Main Character’, right? I mean, you’re not looking for title of first book. So, 1)IS there a main character? 2)What is the world in which the story takes place?

      • June 17, 2011 at 12:01 pm

Most of the story takes place in the Otherworld — aka, Faerie. Noli is the main character, but books 1 & 2 (and probably 3) have Noli, V’s, and Kevighn’s POVs

      • June 16, 2011 at 11:48 pm

LOL, thank you – I’m going to need it. If i’m lucky they’ll promote me two years, meaning I’ll actually only have to study 4 years. As it is, I’ll probably be promoted one year. (5 years study of 6 years in total then).
I’m not too concerned about the two year promotion. I figure that if I do the second year subjects again, then it gives me a better chance of doing really well in them and hopefully making up enough marks to get a scholarship or a bursary.

So. One of the reasons I’ve been a little quiet is because I’ve been doing some serious thinking. I had a brainwave, a foolish, stupid, idiotic one.

I’m going to apply for veterinary science.

  64. June 15, 2011 at 10:32 pm

Antonio, it is nitro glycerin. The nurse was all “it will sting a little bit.” and i was thinking “yeah, sure, whatever. Little tiny pill going under my tongue. Like that’s gonna hurt.” like 30 seconds later i’m screaming in my head “THE PAAAAAIIIIIIIN!!!!” That little sucker hurt like a mo fo.

Jenn…I will tell you how I accidently came across penis fencing. In the hospital room while I was being tortured, they had a tv and were showing little nature show thingies. Anyway, one of them was the ocean so here I am, in IV in my wrist and a blood pressure cuff squeezing the hell out of my other arm, and I’ve got my eyes glued to that tv, naming all the critters. Then it got to flat worms, and I was like “sweet!! flatworms!!” And then they just HAD TO SHOW THE SEX!! And i was like “……great.”

    • mudepoz
      June 15, 2011 at 10:54 pm

Ack! That sounds horrid! Most of the nerves in the body are found in the tongue!
When I think of penis fencing, I think of duels. Then I think of Deliverance and dueling banjos. So I hear dueling banjos while visualizing dueling penii.

      I’m warped.

God Mud! You made me spew hot tea this morning.

    • June 16, 2011 at 12:37 am

LOL, I like flatworms. WE had tons of fun with them in zoology.

Wait. I’m thinking about tapeworms. Not the same, lol.

A couple of years ago I had to get an operation in my chest. I woke up feeling absolutely terrible, tubes stuck in everywhere and, as I turned my very dazed eyes up (also as a nurse was taking my blood pressure) the patient next to me was watching sponge bob square pants. I found myself thinking in those quiet, delusional moments:

      This is hell.

    • Antonio
      June 16, 2011 at 9:16 am

😳 I had no idea! Explosive pills–who knew? I was just making a joke. MUD is thinking the instrumental theme from Deliverance as a soundtrack for worm ‘penis fencing’ but I’m thinking more Barry White…I’ll have to post a YouTube if I can find it…Alyssa–I LIKE SpongeBob! 😆 Have you ever seen Fineas&Ferb?(grin)

😈 I watched the new paranormal show on ABCFamily–The Nine Lives Of Chloe King. It was OK, maybe a notch below the new Teen Wolf(MTV) as far as shows aimed at YoungAdults. They are employing the same Romeo&Juliet romance storyline.

    Reading the 4th book–Blood Promise–in Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy series. It’s pretty good…

Countdown: 11 days to premiere of 4th season of TrueBlood! If you don’t watch, you need to rent the first season(or borrow from library)…

Yes…that series didn’t last very long and was somewhat miscast…I wish it would have lasted longer…

Doing fine. Sorry to have to go to work tomorrow so it probably means I need to take a few days off to recoup. Hope everyone had a great time over the weekend. Mom hurt her back and Sandy and I are servants at the moment, and it is as hot as hell down here, but we’re fine.

I’m so sorry to hear that you mom hurt her back…that sucks 😦 And it’s even worse that you’re demoted to servants lol. Let’s hope for a speedy recovery 🙂
