New show site for LOST GIRL on the Showcase website…

    http://www.showcase.ca/lostgirl/

They still promote that you can catch up on episodes on their site, but I can’t get videos to work…??? I can’t even watch the promo video for the new season…??? (shrug)

    Wazzup? 😆

Suzanne:I hope you feel better. It seems when i get sick I stay sick for about 2 weeks. Haven’t been sick in awhile(knock on wood). Funny: I saw MissE yesterday and she was telling me her and her friends at the pool have a name for guys who wear Speedos…’weenie bikinis.’ I said thanks for the info, I’ll alert the media.(gin)

Game Of Thrones: watched episode 2&3 yesterday…getting more into it, becoming more familiar with all the characters/storylines.

Trent: Well, since the series ends in a few more books, I’m thinking KH doesn’t want to have to add a ‘new guy’ just to satisfy her HEA, she would rather ‘rehabilitate’ Trent (shrug)

Marsha: The Jeaniene Frost series(Night Huntress/Cat&Bones))is one of my favorites! Although the last book was not so good.

    • September 2, 2011 at 12:40 pm

I realize that this is just a fictional book series, but I have issues with the whole Trent reformation angle. In college I was a volunteer at a women’s clinic as part of my psychology class. So damn many of the women that came in there after getting beat up by their husbands and boyfriends said “he really didn’t mean to do it” Hell yes he meant to do it, and he will keep doing it until he kills her! I can’t wrap my mind around the Trent has changed, he had a good reason to try and kill Rachel all those times, he will never do again because he loves her now. Do you know how many women came in to that shelter with bloody noses, black eyes, and broken arms said the same thing? That one semester made me realize that I sure as hell was not cut out to work with people who are abused. I would be in jail or dead by now. They don’t change people!

GAME OF THRONES (HBO TV): yesterday, I watched the first episode in the 10-episode 1st season. GameOfThrones is the classic fantasy book series by George R. R. Martin—pre-industrial, sword and horse epic of politics, sex, deception, and ‘some’ magic(haven’t seen the magic yet, but i sure have seen the sex and deception!). I haven’t read the books–I know! I can’t believe i haven’t either–so I am unfamiliar with the characters/plot. There are a lot of characters by the way, and there is a whole lot going on. Palace intrigue, mystery, sex…it looks beautiful so far…i’m not a big, big fan of preindustial sword and horse fantasies, but i think this is going to be much more than that from what i could tell of the first episode. Looking forward to watching the rest…

So, how you doing?(grin)I’m gathering from KH’s recent blogs that Trent is indeed going to be Rachel’s love interest from here on out. I kinda thought that was where we were going…i wish there was a spin-off series where we could follow Ivy from this point onward–i’d like to know how she’s juggling Daryl and Glenn, who is she biting and who is she not…

    • Marsha
      September 1, 2011 at 12:01 pm

Yep. That’s the way I see it too. More’s the pity…that’s more than I can take.

    • Jenn
      September 1, 2011 at 12:17 pm

Yeah, I’m not all about Trent being her love interest either.
I wish it was Ivy, but they way Rachel is growing (or lack there of) I don’t think Ivy would be happy with her either. *sigh*
I’ll finish the series, but I’m not happy about it.

    • September 1, 2011 at 6:12 pm

I love Game of Thrones (the show, never read the books).

      Trent? Ugh.

I have a nasty virus that’s caused inflation in the lining of my lung making it hard to breathe or even lie down. Not fun.

      • September 1, 2011 at 8:47 pm

That sounds horrible Suzanne. Please take care of yourself.

      • September 1, 2011 at 8:50 pm

Virus or bacteria beastie? Did you see a doc (I’m old enough to be your grandmother!) Lot’s of hot fluids.

I love the Game of Thrones, I’m listening to the second book now. Not that much sex, actually in the book. Though I wouldn’t mind seeing Jason Momoa and Drago…*Slurp* Sorry, I’m getting old and drooley.

      • September 1, 2011 at 9:13 pm

Virus, so no antibiotics, spent all morning in the ER. Blarg.

      • September 1, 2011 at 9:39 pm

No antivirals available? Well, that leaves rest and hot soup. Steam. Hot baths. Vaporizer.

Of course it would be Trent.

BLOODLINES by Richelle Mead: spinoff series in the Vampire Academy(YA) universe. Story is told from POV of the only human in the series, 18-yr-old Sydney who is part of the ‘Alchemists’ orginization, a group who act to keep secret the supernatural world, specifically vampires, from human attention. It’s nice to read a YA where the narrator is so competent, smart. It’s a nice break from Rose who is/was the teenage damphir(half human/half vamp) narrator of the 6-book VA series. I liked Sydney–it’s nice to read a YA where you aren’t rolling your eyes everytime the main character acts/speaks. She’s a young woman, not a girl. Still, she has enough demons, problems of her own to be interesting. In this book she is protecting a vampire princess by hiding in plain site–a human boarding school in Palm Springs, CA(most vampires attend vampire schools). So, there is a fish-out-of-water aspect to both the princess AND Sydney. Sydney was home schooled as a child and has been working for the Alchemists since she was very young(family business). She has to deal with vampires and humans, school bullies, human and vampire friendships, potential suitors(she’s never dated). I liked it. The end of the book makes me wonder the direction of the next. I’d give it a B+/A-. 😎

Edits done! Now, to tackle the new round of Elfpunk edits.

Having a little too much fun working on the Shiny New Project and torturing my poor characters by making them run up and down mountains in 115 degree heat. I think I need one of Tony’s “um hm” checks to see if this story is on target, lol. Not sure if everything works. The setting (my home town) keeps distracting me….

I really want to pick up Shift (Jeri Smith Ready) and Vanish (Sophie Jordan) now that my edits are done. Possess (Gretchen McNeil) also looks good.

Morning! Finished HEXED(2nd in Iron Druid Chronicles)by Kevin Hearne. I liked this book a bit better than the first(hounded)…the characters introduced in the first are all back, with a few more new ones, and time is spent visiting with each…in that respects it reminds me of a big cast tv show or one of Charlaine Harris’s recent books. Not that i’m complaining…it’s a choice, you still have to make it work. There’s a lot of humor and pretty people–and yes, they could be described more fully for me(laugh)but i can understand his editor/publisher understanding his probable buying audience(UF/largely female)and not wanting to turn them off…still, it’s nice to read an UF from a likable male perspective for a change…it’s been described as ‘Jim Butcher Lite’ and i can’t disagree. One thing that tickled me–one of the supernatural bad guys is a rabbi(with a Catholic priest partner) who uses his beard to strangle people with magic!(laugh!)As a connoisseur of the weird and wacky for over 40 years, it takes a lot to surprise me(laugh)and that certainly did. So, I’m liking this series better now and reccomend;i’ve already put in a hold at my local library for the 3rd(Hammered). I’d give it a B/B+. 😎

Reading BLOODLINES by Richelle Mead right now.(new YA series in her same Vampire Academy universe).

I’m 60 pages in and I’m liking it…centers around Sydney the Alchemist, Jill Dragmar(Lisa’s sister), Eddie the Damphir gaurdian, and Adrian(Maori vamp)the troubled playboy vamp. It’s set in Palm Springs, California at a Human boarding school.

KH had a post about ‘stuff’ this morning. It reminded my of an old George Carlin comedy routine about ‘stuff.’

    • August 29, 2011 at 7:27 pm

Tony, my brother’s first wife was from a muscial family, in fact she played the drums in a jazz band. George Carlin was not known as that nice a person, but he paid for dialysis for a musician in Sacramento every year until the man passed away. It seems they were old friends from their lean years together and when Carlin made it big, he took care of his friend for life.

My family claims I slept walked twice when i was a kid: 1)I walked into my parent’s bedroom babbling non-stop, like i was speaking in tongues or something. My mom yells “Tony!” and i immediately stop babbling, i say “peanuts” somewhat mournfully, turn around and went back to bed.(laugh!) and 2)My mom and sister said i went to bed one night when they were watching tv, after a short while i come back to them holding my arm like it’s broken. I tell them “it feels like a banana.” They laugh at me and tell me to go back to bed. Apparently, I have a thing about food when i sleep walk. Luckily, I wasn’t nude in either case.(laugh)

  13. August 28, 2011 at 12:47 pm

    Antonio :
All this talk of slumber parties makes me want to channel my inner-Kylie and ask: Does anybody where pajamas anymore? I think i have a few(doubt they would fit)…my mother used to give me and my sister pajamas for Christmas and we would wear them Christmas Eve/Christmas morning, but never again(laugh)…

I wear them in the winter time and I LOVE wearing socks. My happiest thought about England was that I could wear socks all year round (in bed). Summer I’m more prone to wearing nothing, though unfortunately I’m also prone to sleepwalking (running, jumping, climbing trees…) and have had a few… very embarrasing mishaps. So, now I tend to try and sleep in at least a tank top or something.

    • Antonio
      August 28, 2011 at 1:08 pm

“Hey, John, wake up, I thought I heard something outside.”
“What? Honey, go back to sleep. It’s probably just a squirrel or something.”
      “Just check. Please.”
(husband grouses, gets out of bed, goes downstairs…)
      “John, what was it?”
“It was the neighbor – Alyss – she’s climbing up our lemon tree.”
“No! In the middle of the night? Why?”
“I didn’t ask. Oh–she’s naked, by the way. Did I forget that part?”

      • August 28, 2011 at 2:33 pm

*laughs* I guess it’s about that time where I share a humorous situation…

One lovely summer’s evening when I was still in university, I was sleeping in my birthday suit. So, I thought that I woke up, and heard our gate alarm go off. Now, logically – what I normally do is I get up, call my parents in the house or wait for them to respond. But, being asleep unfortunately, the logical thing for me to do in that case by my reasoning is to run out and try to either bash the robbers or do what ever. (I had it in my mind’s eye that I needed to close a small gate in the gate that isn’t actually there). So, I charge out into the front yard, ready to face hell. I thought that it was in broad daylight as well (when I dream, there’s always light strangely). But, then – after stumbling around our front yard (by the gate) for a while, i realize that a) there’s no little gate. b) it’s not light c) there’s no alarm going off and d) our neighbourhood patrol guy is STARING at me. Oh, and let’s not forget e). I’M NAKED.
So, I run back into the house, very embarrased and spend the rest of that summer sleeping in my winter pajamas.
I didn’t know which neighbourhood patrol guy it was, so for the next two months or so it felt as if ALL of them were staring at me. (they probably were, as news spreads and I’m pretty hard to miss in general as I go jogging a lot).

    • August 28, 2011 at 3:09 pm

That’s funny, and possibly humiliating for me. I’m not prone to sleepwalking, when I sleep I tend to just die until something wakes me up. My mother did tell me that when I was around five I used to sleepwalk. She told me I got up one night when they had some friends over, walked past them to the front door, walked outside and dropped my drawers and peed near the big oak in the front yard. Maybe just a bad sense of direction?

      • August 28, 2011 at 3:21 pm

Nyah, then you’d pee on your feet.
I used to sleep dress to get ready for school. Of course, then I’d be too tired to wake up in the morning, and be late to school. At least I was already fully dressed.

      • August 28, 2011 at 3:26 pm

😛 we think it’s genetic. My brother gets serious night terrors. The other night he dreamt the house was on fire. Our housemate called me in the middle of the night and said that I have to come and help him break down my brother’s door because he’s screaming like mad in there. I then rush into the house (knowing what’s really happening) and when we get the door open my brother is on the bed hysterical because the room’s on fire. It took some convincing to get him to relax.
My father used to dive over my mother tackling burglers. Even i’ve kicked OH on the odd occasion.

So, I went to the Renaissance Fair knowing I was going to do a little shopping. Heh, it was Steam Punk weekend. Heheh. Cool. Found some things, found out a student of mine from Alverno was at one of the shops and sold some of the stuff to me for the cost of the materials. Still a whole lot more money than I thought, though some can be useful for Madrigal Dinners…

One of the reasons I played with, GASP, a skirt? One of my dearest friends built a vardo and does civil war reenactments. With just a bit of retrofitting, it can be used for her reenactments. Plus, of course, the Madrigrals. \\The TD, however, is NOT impressed.

Thanks Marsha, but once past that half century mark… I like it too, though it is cobbled Victorian/renaissance 🙂 There were a couple of strictly Steampunk, however, since we do Madrigals, I figured I might as well go both ways *GRIN* I also am 8 sizes larger than a few years ago.

Then, while I was in the shops, I figured I might as well buy a few things for the garden that I’m trying to start. So, I put all of it on the counter (with tomato seed and beetroot seed) and tell the sales lady (because I imagined that would’ve been what Minias would comment on) that my shopping says that following of me:
“I’m an independent woman, about to go and do some gardening in nothing but her underwear…”
It sounded funnier in the store… -_-

So, last night – I couldn’t sleep a lot because of the ankle. I tossed and turned msot fo teh night, got up at 4:30 and did a couple of stretches (believe me it works) and then got back into bed. And, in that last HOUR before my alarm goes off, I have the greatest dream!
It started a bit strange, I wans’t quite sure what was going on (castle, king with a heavy crown ect). Then, quite suddenly Rachel Morgan appears. She has a fight wiht the one guy, but then gets knocked out and dragged off. I tried to interfere but got thrown out of the castle for my effort. So, I run to Rachel’s house and tell Jenks and Dawid what happened. Jenks said simply: Ivy’s going to freak.
During this conversation, Ivy just appears and heads for the door. I blinked at the boys and then just fell in step next behind her because I knew she was going to need help. she gave me this look and asked if I was going along and I said that I enjoy her driving. We get into this little Citreon (of all things) and, as I’m putting on my seat belt I realize that there’s a LOT of business cards from people under the front seat. I start flicking through them (like Ivy’s little black book) but then unfortunately I woke up, lol.
    I liked it.

And…we now have Tornado warnings for later today here. *shifty eyes* I think it’s following me.

    • August 24, 2011 at 2:02 pm

Yup. I definitely felt the earthquake, but there was no damage.

      • August 24, 2011 at 4:50 pm

Ryan, looks like the hurricane is making you guys a target. They say it could be a Cat 4…be careful. Flooding is the real problem.

You know it’s funny…i thought i felt my chair i was sitting in at the time move, but i thought it was just my expanding waistline not an earthquake…so, i think i did feel it(briefly)…

Cool dream…i never dream about stories, shows, movies…

    ARGH!
I do yoga (yes, that’s my first mistake I know) and tonight, somewhere between movements backwards bending dog, rising cobra and bloody holy cow I sprained my ankle!! I have no idea how it happened. I was just balancing and then I wasn’t…
    Bugger it.

I’m reading A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES by Deborah E. Harkness right now…so far it feels like a standard vampire romance, but there are bits and pieces that keep me reading…what are daemans? what’s up with the magical book everbody seems to want? It’s funny, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the necessity of writing more descriptably(spell?)in today’s world where we are surrounded in our daily life with visual/audio media – computer gaming, cable tv, internet…hell, phones are an entertainment center unto themselves…information on ‘anything and everything’ is literally a few clicks away. I read a book like HOUNDED where the main character meets one beautiful seductress after another(a few of which are naked)and all he describes is their skin tone and hair color!? How often can you describe multiple female characters as ‘beautiful’ before that word loses it’s descriptive meaning…’beautiful blonde characterX says something to beautiful redhead characterY who is the sister of beautiful characterZ’…when you read a book your expected to do some of the heavy lifting in visualizing the story – that’s part of the appeal – but a writer has to do his part, right? And i think the writer has an even greater burden now–our brains are used to instant visual/audio gratification and writers need to adjust. And–describing a desert landscape by listing the correct plant terms deosn’t mean anything to me;I’m not MUD! I’m not a plant expert! (laugh) Soooooooooooo, I start reading a Discovery Of Witches and I get the complete opposite!(laugh) It’s written almost like a book from the early 20th century…every little detail is told to us–how a person looks from head to toe, every little detail on movement and location/settings…it’s a little TOO much!(grin)I don’t know what the answer is…It’s definitely a balancing act—i want to see more, but too much becomes counterproductive to flow, pace…i guess that’s why those who do it well get the big bucks!(grin)…

    • August 23, 2011 at 9:13 am

Discovery of Witches was fantastic. Keep reading. The history of science and the research is spot on.

Suzanne, remember my short story with a historian of science vamp…sigh. Should have finished it.

    Hi Gang,
So, Andy & I went camping on the weekend, which was good except for the 6inches of water we were under for a couple hours! My tent was floating lol. Actually, we only got the outter edge of a tornado that struck my home town of Goderich. They are saying it is the worse tornado to strike Canada in the last 15 years.
Since we were about a half hour away, we went & road our bikes through town on our way home. I just can’t get over the changes. It’s…devistating.
Here is a link of a video that someone made of some of the pictures. The first shot is of the down center as it was before the tornado struck.

    • August 23, 2011 at 6:53 am

That is so scary. TD and I were camping in Blue Mound State Park, just a few miles away when the town of Barneveld in WI was taken out entirely (except the water tower!) by a tornado!

That’s too bad. I’m glad your okay though. I don’t think of Canada having tornados(or earthquakes), but I guess it happens – we just don’t hear about it.

      • Jenn
        August 23, 2011 at 10:06 am

We do get both, but not usually anything this big. They are saying this is the biggest one in 15 years.

    • August 23, 2011 at 6:20 pm

Oh no! I hope no one was badly hurt. At least down here we have warning systems since they are so common.

  32. Antonio
    August 22, 2011 at 1:24 pm

    Hey Ho! 😆

    stuff…

THE IMPERFECTIONISTS by Tom Rachman: this book got a lot of attention when it came out a year or two ago…it’s a short book that is really a collection of stories about the workers/writers of an english-language newspaper in rome, Italy. Sounds cool, right? It’s apparently going to be made into a movie and I’m sure it will be pretty good. The book? Well…I found the stories depressing…each chapter is devoted to a different person and it’s one depressing story after another…I quit reading after reading the first 3(of 11) stories…maybe if this was a movie and I at least got to see Rome it would have been okay…

HOUNDED:THE IRON DRUID CHRONICLES by Kevin Hearne(bk 1 of 3): On a more upbeat note, this new UrbanFantasy series by a previously unpublished male writer, is better–I actually read the ‘whole’ book!(laugh)As SUZANNE noted earlier, it is set in Arizona(where author lives)and features a number of real locales. The main character is a 2,000+ year-old Druid who appears to be a 21-yr-old locale who owns a local bookstore/coffee shop/occult shop. His best friend is a wolf dog who he mentally converses with…yes, you read that right. The humor is a little obvious and strained, but i appreciate the effort;it’s nice to read something with a bit of humor these days(read ‘above’ review). There are werewoves, witches, and vampires, and demons, but primarily we are dealing with Irish/Celtic mythology and their Gods. It’s different, to be sure. I wish I liked it better. I’m going to try the second book(with reservations)…would I reccomend? Sure, if you can find it at the library. Keep expectations in check–it’s not as good as it’s customer reviews on Amazon indicate, in my opinion. Id give it a B-/B…

THE SOCIAL NETWORK(movie): I’m a bit late in seeing this(as always with me and movies). It’s about the founder(s) of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg and friends. It’s written by Aaron Sorkin(West Wing, among other things). It’s good, really interesting, well acted. If you haven’t seen, I’d reccomend. A.

Anybody seen THE HELP? It’s my sister’s favorite book and we might go see the movie… 😎

    • August 22, 2011 at 5:19 pm

I definitely do not need a depressing story. I’m still on a bit of a break from UF, but anxious to get back when a good story comes out. I’ve been thinking of trying some of the lesser known authors, but it’s almost September and I might be watching more TV. Maybe I can afford to by an e-reader near Christmas and I won’t feel so bad about trying new authors.

    I saw U2 on tv recently…

    • August 21, 2011 at 11:22 pm

I have to admit, I like U2. (If I’m in the right mood). They came to our country recently. I’d have loved to see them but alas, tickets flew like hot cakes.
Another band I like is REM…

      • Antonio
        August 22, 2011 at 9:05 am

I’ve seen U2 play live, but i’ve never caught REM live. I always liked REM, but I really like and admire U2. I’m old enough to remember when REM was the indi-alternative darling…they were very big on college radio and alternative, independent stations(back when there was such a thing)…then they became very big on MTV(when they actually played videos)…

Ryan/Tony–Missy is at Grandmas. 🙂 Hubs surprised me with this trip. I think 4-5 days is sually the most we’re ever apart, and we’ll both be back mon, so I think it’ll be okay

Just to catch y’all up. Yesterday I got a voicemail my father died. He was NOT a nice person, and we haven’t talked for years. I’m also old and he was ill.

Still, ambivalent. He was an amazing artist, and if he’d gone that route instead of publishing and hitting people, he may have turned out all right. Instead, he squandered an amazing talent.

It was also a reason I took an anger management class. I must be good at it, because my crazy colleague said she’s NEVER seen me angry. Then again, the TD gets a lot of that.

PRIEST–watched the movie Priest yesterday(post-apocalyptic world where vampires are definitely NOT sparkly, but horrific killing machines). Priests in this world are humans with ‘special’ powers that fight/kill the threat. It’s not a great movie, to be sure, but it was better than i thought(given the poor reviews)…it’s a short movie, comic-book-like in storytelling…still, I liked it…MaggieQ was beautiful, as always…paul bettany was good…Karl Urban was good as the bad guy…I’d give it a C+/B-. 😎

Reading the IMPERFECTIONISTS by Tom Rathman right now. It’s a story about an english-language newspaper in Rome and it’s employees. It got A LOT of buzz when it came out last year(the film rights have been sold already, i think to George Clooney)…but I’m not enjoying it at all…I really like the set-up, c’mon–ROME, ITALY!!! Writers! So far….Booooorrrrriiiinnnngggggg…I rented the movie PRIEST today(future apocalyptic world full of vampires, starring Paul Bettany and MaggieQ)…it didn’t do well at box office and got bad reviews, but I’m looking forward to watching it…ALYSS:I don’t know how I could get GameOfThrones to you…I could get you a pirated DVD to you for $13.50 + shipping…Anybody going to see FRIGHT NIGHT with Colin Farrell?

That would be fun, and dangerous for Tony. We SEC fans are rabid about college football…although I’m not that bad.*snort* Unfortunately I think we are in different leagues and don’t play each other unless it’s for the National championship, which I’m pretty sure the SEC has won for the 5-6 years.* cough* Even if Auburn did cheat to get their’s last year.

Ohio State has gotten into a bit of trouble this year and lost their quarterback and coach so we are not in a hurry to play Alabama/Auburn…

  45. August 14, 2011 at 7:35 am

Morning guys. How are you all enjoying your weekends? Wow I hope no one was at the Sugarland Concert yesterday! I probably would have been if I lived there, probably the only one here who likes Country though.

    • August 14, 2011 at 8:46 am

      Hello bunnies,

      What happened there? 🙂

      • August 14, 2011 at 8:54 am

Hi Alyssa. There was a big concert at the State Fair in Indianappolis and the stage was blown down on the attendees, killing at least four. How was your weekend? Life is tough for the working class like us, did you get to relax?

      • August 15, 2011 at 12:04 am

Shame, so the people really blew their fans away huh?

      • August 15, 2011 at 12:06 am

        🙂 Yes, working class sucks.
My weekend was alright. We went out with OH’s family or rather, OH’s sister’s new boyfriend and HIS family. Now, that was a bit tough because honestly? I don’t like the guy and I don’t think he particulary likes me and OH or rahter – what we are.
So, that was a bit awkward.
I did some serious relaxing yesterday, which was good. I’m exhausted, even as I’m sitting ehre. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I went for a vitamin B and Iron injection the other day (OUCH!!!!!!!). I’m drinking extra protein.
        And nothing. No energy. Sigh.

Football!(*grin)…football has started up again which is good…i’m looking forward to fall…looking forward to tonight’s episode of TrueBlood as well(episode #8 of season 4)…Also, I’m going to watch the first episode of GAME OF THRONES(my friend has been taping the first season for me)…I got the first season of THE GOOD WIFE(DVD)at the library last week(I was on a waiting list for months)so I’ve been watching that–have you seen? It’s really good. 😎

      • August 15, 2011 at 12:09 am

I despise you Tony. I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to watch a Game of Thrones but it’s not out here yet and nobody can download it for me!!

Hey guys! Somebody going to Vegas? Lol. I’ve never been there. Hm.
I posted part eight of my story Ashes of Victory…
    http://wp.me/p13Itw-Nh
    Have a great weekend everyone!

  47. August 11, 2011 at 6:39 pm

Are there any other NaStys out there that would like to go to Vegas sometime? The hotels are so inexpensive out there right now, and I’d love to see the Bellagio and some of the other major hotels.

    • August 11, 2011 at 10:38 pm

      ME ME ME!!!!

lol. Actually, vegas has never been on the list of places I wanted to see. I always got the impression that there were too many people and lights for my liking.
But, heck – if the hotels are cheap… 😉

      • August 12, 2011 at 6:20 am

Yes, you’re probably right, but some of the super hotels sound so interesting. The Venetian has gondolas and a canal, the Luxor is modeled after the Great Pyramid, the Bellagio has all those fountains. It’s such a testament to the great American love of excess that was such a part of our innocence. That is all part of our past now.

I haven’t been to Vegas in a few years…not my favorite place…fun to gamble…fun to see shows(although VERY expensive!)…It IS cheaper in the summer if you can stand the dichotomy of blistering heat and frigid airconditioning…you know what’s nice?…their hotel pool areas…I stayed at Caesars once and they have 3 really nice pools(one topless)…

      • August 13, 2011 at 9:40 am

We have to live through four months of that dichotomy every summer, Tony.

  48. August 11, 2011 at 12:41 pm

Thanks everyone. I may or may not go to Seattle. We’ll see.

  49. August 11, 2011 at 11:47 am

😉 I’m off to have wine. How was everybody else’s days?
Disected over a HUNDRED dead chickens.

    • August 11, 2011 at 6:02 pm

Eeeewww…I’d go drink something after that too.

    • August 11, 2011 at 10:39 pm

Hmm. My partner in crime who I went out with couldn’t drink alcohol so we ended up drinking coffee instead. I didn’t sleep a wink.
Next time I’m drinking wine. Bugger it.

😆 Hey, hey! yesterday, I used an old, old, old pop-culture reference in a question I asked to KH on her DramaPage…I quoted the lyrics from a mostly obscure singer from the late 80s/early 90s, MOJO NIXON and his song, ‘Elvis Is Everywhere!’ Mojo thought everybody had a little bit of Elvis in them…everybody except Michael j. Fox(laugh). I don’t know why he was picking on MFox(grin)…anyhoo–back in the day, I actually caught Mojo live when he was in Dayton(a dive bar called Canal Street Tavern that always had interesting acts)…a very attractive female friend of mine at the time found her way to the stage where she danced for awhile as Mojo introduced her to the crowd as “Miss PoonTango 1991!” …

    • August 11, 2011 at 10:43 pm

here’;s my blast from the past. i was looking for another song, but I coudln’t find it. 🙂
so, I figured I’d do this one instead.

May I have a blurb *Splutter*

  53. August 10, 2011 at 11:49 am

So, I was nominated for an Airship award (award at a steampunk con in Seattle). That’s exciting.

I’m trying to get my YA “slumber party” themed party proposal wrapped up for RT since they’re due. I’ve got 13 people and a couple of emails outstanding. I’m not at the OMG, I don’t want people to feel left out point. Someone gave me some people to also invite, but they’re A list and I’m feeling bashful because they’re not authors I chat with on twitter, etc.

    Yeah, I’m lame.

    • Jenn
      August 10, 2011 at 12:15 pm

Congrats on the award! That’s totally awesome, Suzi!
I would love to attend a slumber party like that lol It sounds like a blast will be had by all!
Don’t be bashful. What’s the worst that’s going to happen? They will send a polite thanks, but no thanks. And the best? They check out your work, love it & come to the party. Think positive!

    • August 10, 2011 at 4:52 pm

I completely agree with everything Jenn said below. You are about to be a published author and you can stand your own withe the best of them. If you are really worried, don’t invite the authors you have a fan girl thing for.

WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE by JIM BUTCHER(GraphicNovel):I know, I know–another GN!(grin);I’m really utilizing my local library lately. The GN takes place right before the adventures in the first book(Storm Front)…it’s better than the Patricia Briggs GN, but…I have seen the UrbanFantasy graphic Novel adaptation that really works for me, which is odd–you would think the UF content would work…So, I thought about why I think UF works in general in books:it’s the meeting of the ‘fantastic’ with the prosaic, i.e. places and characters that are familiar to us. Rachel is a young, single person who is a witch, but seems very familiar to us–she doesn’t ride a broom, wear black, and cackle–she seems like an ‘every woman’ struggling with her boss and fellow workers, has lost a parent and has issues with her mother and brother, loses her apartment, doesn’t have a car and has to ride the bus…I think this mixture of danger and death with what seems ‘real’ and normal is a comfortable transition for people who are used to watching police procedurals on television the last 15 years…sure, the episode may open with a grisly death/murder, but those who are charged with solving the case are attractive, funny, charming, sexy–we enjoy hanging out with them, smiling more at their antics even as they banter over a dead body. The key is all the human interaction…and with graphic novels, there just doesn’t seem the time/page space to make that balance work…at least for me…I think the manga-style comic would be a better vehicle, graphically, for UrbanFantasy stories myself…note: I see that GAIL CARRIGER’s PARASOL PROTECTORATE stories are going to be given a MANGA adaptation(rather than the american style GraphicNovel)…THAT will be interesting to see/read! The Japanese, believe it or not, have always had a love affair with Anglican influences in their art, including Victorian era…should be interesting!

MERCY THOMPSON:HOMECOMING(GraphicNovel):this has been out awhile, but i just read it yesterday(picked it up at library). It’s set before the first MThompson book, when Mercy just moves into town. There’s a lot of eye candy/T&A of Mercy(much like BloodWork)…i guess the comic industry feels if you are going to do a graphic version of a UF adaptation, then you should appeal to males with buxom leads(not compaining*grin), but i think they are ignoring the largely female audience of the books…it’s a problem, granted…males read comics more than females, but women readers are so dominate in UF(shrug). The story/Art? Not that good unfortunately…i can’t really reccomend(unless you have an hour to kill and you check it out of the library for free)…

    • August 9, 2011 at 6:06 pm

Is this the next wave, popular authors writing graphic novels? I’m afraid I just can’t get into them. Judging by all the comic con type conferences the must be very popular somewhere.

Yeah, it’s so popular they had graphic novel stuff at RT

  58. August 8, 2011 at 9:03 am

I will figure out tomorrow how to upload video/pics. Anyone who’s my friend on facebook, I uploaded video and pics Friday.

Jenn–tonight do you want to send me what you have and I’ll start on that tomorrow while you finish up the rest of it? I really appreciate you reading the whole thing for me with out a lot of time. I hope you’re enjoying it.

Tony/Jenn-Remember that idea I sent you with the punk band on tour? Well, it just didn’t work as a retelling of my old story…but I really like it. So, I’m taking Tony’s suggestion and making it it’s own story with new characters and personality quirks.. I’m shifting locales. It’s going to be set in Tempe instead of Seattle. Always wanted to set a story there.. I also changed tenses, since present tense was annoying me. At some point soon I may send it to you to see how everything works. It’s about 100 pages now.

    Mud–Feel better ~hugs gently~

Kylie-I have this new project I’m setting in Tempe, most takes place on Mill Ave. I just wrote a scene that takes place at a club very much like the one we went to…

Sorry guys, I’m sick as a dog. No, my dogs never got this sick. My gums were flayed open, the bone ground done, and the whole thing stitched with thread and bubble gum. ”

I’m a chemically enhanced, although once natural, redhead. We do not have a good pain tolerance and need more pills than normal. It’s part of the pathway that makes the color. Anyhow, I’m nauseous, the TD is in Fargo, and whatever I cook resembles rubber. The dressing cracked pretty much off and I resemble Frankenstein. Square jaw, no chin, and green.

Speaking of LOST GIRL…i see these fan-made youtube clips and this one caught my eye…it’s a video of clips highlighting something you don’t often see on tv: a series with two female leads. There are a few, but not many. In this show, Bo is a bi-sexual supernatural predator(succubus) and Kenzie is a human thief…their chemistry is fun, they truly act like best friends…they aren’t shy in their affections for each other…it would be so tedious if they were cautious, jumpy around each other…anyhoo–

  61. August 7, 2011 at 8:01 am

It’s mighty quiet in here. I hope it’s because everyone is having a great weekend.

    • August 7, 2011 at 9:09 am

Yep, still in the land of no internet. Missy did really good in the mutton busting. She came in 4th. There were only 2 girls out of 15.

I pulled a kylie and got major sunburn at the fair yesterday.

Been catching up on reading and doing a little toying with a new-ish story. (Yes, Tony, it has a bad ass girl).

      Catch you later.

Oh–and in answer to your question about the new Iron Druid Chronicles series by Kevin Hearne…yes, the main character apparently lives in Arizona…haven’t read yet…the first book got RAVE customer reviews…I tried reading M Acevedo, by the way, but couldn’t get into it(Nymphos of…something…?)

I don’t know about ‘great’ but I’m having an OK weekend…did you ever watch the LOST GIRL DVD? I watched it again and lent it to a friend…the new season starts sunday September 4th, but i’m not sure how i can watch it?…the Showcase site doesn’t replay the shows(at least for me, maybe you have to subscribe or something?)…I think you can watch them through I-Tunes(but i’ve never done that myself;i’ve never used I-tunes before)…going over to lady friend’s house later to watch TrueBlood…you need to check it out, i’m sure you can rent the earlier seasons and catch up…reading GHOST COUNTRY by Patrick Lee(followup to The Breech/SciFi suspense series)…I’m ready for some footbaaaallllll!!! 😎

Apparently, KH is giving away some TRUTH books(Dawn Cook books)monday…i haven’t read them yet(I read the first PRINCESS book/different series)

      • August 7, 2011 at 12:19 pm

I did watch it and it was really nice to see it in better quality. I would like to get my hands on season two. Is the one coming on in the USA season three? I may have to get my hands on some of the True Blood DVDs. I hope to be able to buy myself a nice tablet this fall, so I could just download them and watch them on that I guess. Does it really need a large screen to enjoy it?

Tony – I have to catch up on Lost Girl too. I hope I can find them all online again! And do you know that I still haven’t read any of the True Blood books or seen the TV show?

GHOST STORY by Jim Butcher. I love this series and the character. The last book -CHANGES – was maybe the best book that i read last year–it was a finale of sorts for the character/series…the lead character is at a crossroads in this one(GhostStory) – literally – sort of a This is Your Life/A Christmas Story…I guess the author didn’t want to throw his main character into just another Dresden Adventure without stopping to muse about his past, his choices, and his future…it’s something only someone who has reached a certain mature point in his character’s narrative could do…still, it’s a bit tedious, page after page – so much internal monologue – not that there isn’t some action/story, there is, but the book’s long(490 pages) and really it could have had 100 pages cut out with no problem. I get why the writer had to ‘go there’ but that doesn’t mean it was a great read. I’d give it a B.

    Have a great weekend! 😎

    • August 5, 2011 at 9:51 am

I picked up the third book for my “to read” pile, Tony. I enjoyed book two. I’ve been reading quite a bit now that I have a bit more time on my hands. I did take a break from UF though, I read one by Amanda Quick and I’m reading the last Pendergast book that finally came out in paperback. This one is much better than the last, and I’m really enjoying my old friend Pendergast this time. I find I do miss my kick-ass lady friends and I’m really looking forward to getting back to some UF after the break. I think maybe I really need to go other places in my reading once in awhile.

I know what you mean…i keep looking for some non-UF that looks interesting…however, i read some interesting customer reviews of a brand new UF series written by a male writer – I know! The rare male UF writer – named Kevin Hearne who writes something called The Iron Druid Chronicles. It’s a trilogy that was released in 3 consecutive months(May-June-July)and the first is called Hounded. It sounds very promising–I have a ‘hold’ on it in our local library system(i’m borrowing more than buying these days)…

      • August 7, 2011 at 9:05 am

I have recently been discovering comics on the internet. I’m sure this is nothing new to Kylie, as she is on deviant, but i tend to be late to the party on things like this. There is so much out there! Mostly free, sometimes professionals, but often just young people who are still in school. The internet has become such a wonderful tool/outlet for young artists–writers, film-makers, photographers, musicians, artists of all kinds…poeple can put up a sign and open for creative business…make contacts, gain experience…anyhoo–discovering more and more of this stuff out there…there is a site(comicrank.com)that lists many of these sites…so much diversity! Something for everyone…SUZANNE–there are some steampunk stuff for instance: ‘Lady Sabre & the Pirates Of the Ineffable Aether’ is a brand new online comic that is BEAUTIFUL. Bustles and air pirates and gadgets…right up your alley…
    http://www.ineffableaether.com/
MUD–there is A LOT of zombie stuff out there! Anyhoo…

Still reading GHOST STORY…not one of my favorite Dresden(Jim Butcher) books. Going to watch BLACK SWAN tonight!

    Be good! 😎

I am under my editing deadline and I have not just one vacations but two this month, smack in the middle of my deadline.

I am told the “I suck” phase is the first phase of revisions. It’s been about 5 weeks and I haven’t left it. I think I’ll just have to come to terms that there is no phase other than “I suck” and deal with the 15 pounds I’m going to gain from all the crap I’m eating.

The tot and I leave tomorrow for the land of no internet and will be there for about a week — but Missy will get to ride a sheep in the rodeo and march in a parade, so it’s all good.

Ride a sheep in the rodeo? I live the most boring life imaginable. It’s a good thing I have a rich and varied fantasy life I guess.

      PS. You do not suck.

I don’t think many kids get to mutton bust, which is why we’re treking to the Midwest so she can have the opportunity.

Um, does anyone live near Kansas? Like middle of nowhere central Kansas?

Kansas is a Long way from me. LOST GIRL–A friend is trying to copy MY copy of the first season, and if he can, then i’ll send you a copy(if it’s encripted, he probably won’t be able to). It will be on Syfy this fall apparently, so there is that…I think that Lost Girl, along with TrueBlood and Fringe and Warehouse13, is one of my favorite SciFi/Fantasy shows…it’s really one of the very few that fits the ‘Urban Fantasy’ description…

Hai gais! Lol I need to rant. Cuz I’m feeling rather strange. I’m like bipolar, but feeling both extremes at the same time.

So.. Ranting. Y’all know how much I love Psych, yes? It means a lot to me, cuz it helps my emotional state (and not to mention I’m in love with one of the main characters [and not just his character, but him, too] and it’s always good to see him). Anyway, they had a contest over on twitter the other day. Trivia stuff, y’now? I entered four times. Each time with the correct answer (but apparently that didn’t have any effect on your chances, you just had to submit something). They’d pick five people. I. Didn’t. Win. WHAT THE HELL!!! I have never won anything in my life. One would think that SOMETIME I’d win SOMETHING!! Normally, I don’t actually give a fuck. BUT THIS IS PSYCH WE’RE TALKING ABOUT!!!! I would give my soul to Steve Franks if he asked for it!! Grrrrr. ALSO the new season WON’T START UNTIL OCTOBER!!! Damn network PUSHED IT BACK CUZ IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE NOOOOOOWWWWWW!!!! And then there was ComiCon. Psych was there. Tim…was there. AND I WAS NOT!!!

    Siiiiiiiigh.

    End rant.

    • July 30, 2011 at 9:13 pm

You’re only 21 Kylie, you have a lifetime left to win! Try some kind of writing contest, you should have a good chance at that.

    Hey ya’ll. Where is everybody?

    • Antonio
      July 30, 2011 at 10:22 am

I’m here.(grin)It’s hot and hazy here. Keeping somewhat busy reading…

CHEW(GraphicNovel)by John Layman and Rob Guillory. I read that Showtime is developing a series based on the graphic novel so i checked the first 3 collected volumes out of the library to check out. Setup:world has been racked by bird flu(supposedly) killing off over a 100 million people. So, chickens are contraband(laugh)and the FDA and other enforcement agencies are busy tracking down illegal sale, trade in poultry. Serious. Our hero is something called a CIBOPATHIC–he can tell the history of anything and everything by eating it:fruit, meat…people! A cannibal detective! It’s actually pretty well done, entertaining, smartly done w/equal parts goofy, icky fun, and murder, meyhem and mystery. I can’t wait to see this on TV.

GHOST STORY by Jim Butcher. Just started. I think this book is a ‘transition story’ that some are liking and others…not so much. We’ll see…

      • July 30, 2011 at 10:25 am

        Transition to what?

I’m writing, got my first real rejection (the story was not appropriate, huh?) and will hit the APT in Spring Green WI for The Critic:)

M–Sorry about the rejection letter, but I doubt there has ever been a writer who hasn’t been rejected at least once…the real sadness is never trying(or not finishing what one starts, as is often my case*grin), so good for you that you try! That’s more than what most can say(especially since you are so busy with other things)

Transition(latest Jim Butcher/Dresden book): The last book(his 12th) was his best, I think, and the reviews/sales reflect that. It tied up a lot of story threads, big revelations, edge-of-you-seat action climax…it almost felt like the end of the series, like every previous book had lead to the climax of this book…if it had ended there – and with a few more loose threads tied – I think everyone would have reluctantly been satisfied. I can’t give up the ending to that book(in case you read the series in the future), but it was a BIG cliff hanger and Harry’s life is LITERALLY in limbo. He has to complete a task in this book(GHOST STORY…hint, hint) to truly move on to the next stage in his life. It’s a different book, i’ll tell you that(i’m 200 pages in), not something he could have got away with earlier in his career. But, it’s cool that he can now.

I have tweo huge bird-of-prey birds hanging out in my yard all week. they are bigger than a cat, a small dog even. I don’t know what they are–you don’t see birds like that in busy suburban Dayton, Ohio. They sit on my bird bath with thousand-mile stares pooping into the water. They aren’t afraid of anybody or anything…they act like it’s their yard. I’m also seeing Cicadas…do you know what they are?(I’m not sure if everybody has them)…they are huge ugly insects that hibernate in the ground for years(I think ours are 17-year Cicadas…?), then come out for a brief amount of time before dying…they make a lot of noise. Anyhooo–amazon has shipped my Jim Butcher book–yeah!–and i’m waiting on that. 😎

    • July 27, 2011 at 10:28 am

Probably a red tailed hawk. They’ve been known to carry off small dogs down here. We have cicadas every year down here, they were so loud last year up in Florence at the courthouse you couldn’t hold a conversation outside. They were louder than the cooling towers.

      • Antonio
        July 28, 2011 at 9:02 am

We don’t seem to have as many Cicadas as we used to…one of my most vivid childhood memories is sitting in a small pup-tent in my back yard w/a cousin as Cicadas swarmed overhead, seemingly blocking out the sky…you don’t forget something like that, let me tell you.

    • Jenn
      July 27, 2011 at 11:41 am

We have cicadas every year here too. They are out for August, but this year, they started early (a week ago).
Take a pic of the birds…maybe we can all figure it out together. 🙂

ROBOPOCALYPSE by Daniel H. Wilson:yes, a story about a robot uprising isn’t new, but I really enjoyed this one. Stories told from multi-POVs can sometimes not work, especially if there are a lot of viewpoints/characters–you like some characters/POVs more than others. I liked all the POVs/characters in this one however. The book is only 350 pages long and the chapters relatively short, so you don’t miss anyone for too long. It’s surprising–this is the kind of book that could have easily been twice as long…epic in scope…but the author wisely keeps things short and sweet…it’s almost as if he was writing a novelization of a movie(which i guess he has*it IS going to be a movie;movie rights were sold ‘before’ book was published). I would highly reccomend…A-.

It’s still hot…interspersed with occasional rain…it’s like living in Florida!

Watched a movie last night: JENNIFER’S BODY. Written by Diablo Cody(JUNO) it stars Meghan Fox as a teen who is possessed by a Demon. It got bad reviews when it came out, and it’s not perfect, but I thought it was actually pretty good.(shrug) 😎

  84. July 22, 2011 at 10:38 pm

Okay, I need some male input here.

So I have a couple of scenes where my hero acts hot and cold towards the MC, Like literally, he’ll kiss her they physically push her away or shout at her while she’s trying to profess her love for him. He loved her, a lot and it’s not conflicted emotions that cause him to push her away, but because he’s trying to protect her. At this point in the story, them proclaiming their love, or doing um, other things, could have serious consequences for my MC, as in death. But the hero doesn’t tell her these things, he just continues to run hot and cold. His reasoning is that the explanation (that he’s trying to protect her) sounds dumb and he isn’t sure she’ll understand. (He is 17). However, my editor doesn’t think that’s a compelling reason to not tell her. Any ideas on better reasoning??? Him telling her would kill some good conflict/misunderstanding….

    • July 23, 2011 at 9:00 am

GOOD MORNING ALYSSA!!! Are we hung over this morning hon?

    • July 23, 2011 at 9:06 am

So would it ruin the story if she was led to believe he had another girl he was trying to be faithful to? Or would a lie ruin the entire arc of the story between these two? Sorry, not a male perspective.

    • July 23, 2011 at 1:11 pm

What about him saying something like, “We can’t do this… Every time I’ve been with someone, I wind up hurting her. I’ve hurt too many people. I don’t want that to happen with you.” Pretty lame, huh? If I knew more about the story?

    • July 23, 2011 at 1:31 pm

He was hurt in love, and misses her…

    • Antonio
      July 24, 2011 at 9:21 am

Maybe he isn’t allowed to tell anyone the real reason(s), compelled by threat of death…or worse. Maybe there is the threat that everything , including himself, could be sacrificed by(uthority of others of his kind? (I don’t know his allegeince, makeup). He could even be magically cursed to protect this secret, etc. bound by ancient, sacred vows. He could forfeit his life and the lives of those he loves(is there anyone else he is close to that could be threatened? family, friends, country, etc.

AAAARRRRGGGGGG so HOT! (pant, pant, perspire)

Watched movie: CEDAR RAPIDS. It’s a small independent movie starring Ed Helms(The Hangover, The Office) and a cast of recognizable character actors about insurance agents at a big conference in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Oh, I can remember the MANY awkward business conferences in medium-sized hotels in my life…probably a lot of you can as well. Usually, you have to share a room with someone and fake interest, excitement in whatever company you are in at the time. It’s so weird and awkward and…sad sometimes. Anyhoo–I really liked the movie and would reccomend.

Reading ROBOPOCALYPSE by Daniel H. Wilson right now. Story about a robot uprising/war. It’s gotten a TON of attention in the media and is apparently going to become a movie(developed by S.Speilberg no less). So far it seems overly familiar, but I’m still interested. It will prbably be a better movie than book…right now it’s ‘meh'(shrug).

    Be good! 😎

    • July 22, 2011 at 9:59 am

      -_- It’s even hot here.

FYI – this is why I loved the Mass Effect Game so much:
