Anyone willing to beta a cyberpunk YA (Jenn, you read this one). I rewrote the entire ending and most of the love scenes and so much has changed that I feel it needs one more look over before I send it to my agent. Anyone game? There is sex, violence, adult situations, robots, corporate warfare, princes, reality TV, and explosions.

Oh, I do feel the need to add the warning that it *is* from the POV of a 16 yr old girl, so there are lots of *feelings*

    • June 8, 2012 at 1:44 pm

Honey I’m way too old to remember how I felt and thought at 15. It was a whole other world then anyway. Sounds wonderful though.

TRUEBLOOD season 5 premiere this sunday. WooHoo! There was a big cliff-hanger at end of season 4(i won’t be specific for those who haven’t seen yet) and there is speculation that a female cast member who is human will be turned by a vampire(the main guess has been Vampire Pam, bisexual, violent, funny). I don’t think so. I rewatched last season(HBO has been replaying episdoes) and the episode where 2 cast members went to Mexico to explore magical answers(I’m trying to be circumspect here)has given me alot of thought. I think magic(necromancy) is going to have more to do with this than vampirism. It’s going to be interesting. The show is crazy and over-the-top with drama, violence, romance, and sex – there’s nothing else like it.

    Have a great weekend!

I am behind on Lost Girl.

Back from NYC. Only gone 2 days, didn;t see much, though I did get kidnapped for shoe shopping. πŸ™‚

ZOMG, so many people were in my signing line not everyone got a book. (I felt bad) There were people from all over the world — Germany, Norway, Quebec, South Africa, Australia. it was *awesome* I felt like a rockstar.

    • June 6, 2012 at 12:50 pm

Too cool!(grin) I mean, the “Rock Star” feeling, not the “feeling bad” part.

    • June 6, 2012 at 4:30 pm

Hey we know you’re a rock star!

So, RL Stien has a copy of my ARC. He’d tweeted that he’d be up for trading ARCs. So, I got one from my publicest at BEA, signed it, stood in his signing line, and when I introduced myself, he *remembere* me. He was like “oh, there you are!” It was pretty awesome.

      • June 7, 2012 at 12:07 am

That is awesome Suzanne!! I have a kindle now so I’ll be able to buy your book when it gets published. πŸ˜€

  5. June 6, 2012 at 8:58 am

What up? πŸ˜€ I’ve been catching up with Lois McMaster Bujold lately: ETHAN OF ATHOS and LABYRINTH. I know I’ve written about her before, but if you want to read really good space opera/Sci Fi you need to read her. Even if you don’t think you would like it, trust me, you will. Also finished THE GHOST BRIGADES by John Scalzi(follow-up to OLD MAN’s WAR). Hard Scifi/Military SciFi with ALOT of heart. Actually, this series has a ton of heart and is very romantic in it’s own way. This is another trilogy i’d reccomend. Don’t worry, it’s not a huge sprawling, ongoing saga like Ms. Bujold’s work. In fact, the books are quick reads, under 325 pages each. Mr. Scalzi is actually a local here in sounthern Ohio and is the president of the SFWA(Science Fiction Writers of America). Apparently, his site gets something like 11 million visitors a year!?!? I think i read that. Anyway, i checked his site/blog and discovered his newest book, THE REDCOATS, is the first TOR book to be offered as a DRM-free book(Digital Rights Management) which means after you buy it you can do whatever you want with it(transfer it to other mediums, give it away, share, etc). Apparently, by summer, all TOR books will be DRM-free. Interesting. They are kind of acknowledging that they see the future and realize digital books can’t be handled the same as traditional books. The genie is out of the bottle and getting fatter by the day, no amount of shoving and prodding and lawsuits are going to be able to put it back. I think it’s going to be more important than ever for authors to build relationships with the fans. It’s harder to abuse someone’s rights whom you like and respect and know, at least on some level. Did anybody see SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN yet?

I see an article in HuffingtonPost about Syfy officially renewing LOST GIRL for a 13-episode season 3 starting in January 2013. Nice article and a few links to other related articles, including one w/show creator Michelle Lovretta.

    • June 6, 2012 at 12:02 am

I know! Isn’t it exciting!!! How far have you watched season 2?

      • June 6, 2012 at 8:41 am

The last episode i saw was episode #7(i think) of season 2(skekies/exotic dancers). So, i have 15 more episodes of season 2 left to watch.

      • June 6, 2012 at 2:09 pm

Right, now I know not to talk my mouth away, lol. I’m done with season 2. And it’s awesome.

Book Potential for those who like strong female characters and don’t mind the occasional f/f:

I’ve recently acquired a kindle (never thought I’d see the day) and on it found a free book called When Women Were Warriors. it’s the first in a series of three, and it’s a beautiful book. The next two are not free, they’re about $9,99 each. But, they are great. Why?
Because in it, the love between two women are expressed as if it’s normal. The women are strong characters without loosing their feminity. It’s amazing, it reads like a song.

    • June 4, 2012 at 4:53 pm

Sounds good. Is it contemporary or historical fiction? I know what you mean. I never thought I’d love my NOOK, but I do. It has wi-fi and I can get email and the internet when I’m reading in bed. It should come in handy this winter when/if it gets cold.

      • June 6, 2012 at 12:01 am

Historical, it plays off in the old ‘celtic’ times. She’s not specific, but she talks about tribes and lands and standing stones. πŸ™‚ I love the book, one of the main characters maara reminds me of myself in a way.
Here’s a link to the free download: http://www.catherinemwilson.com/free-ebook.html

    • June 5, 2012 at 9:29 am

I don’t know if this is the case in SAfrica or not, but public libraries offering e-books are becoming more and more common here. It makes you wonder how this is going to effect the bottom-line for publishing. If one prefers e-books and one can download their books for free, why buy the book? I know libraries pay a fee for the rights(and the renewel rights after a certain time), but it is interesting to think about. Side effect: more public $ support for libraries. I keep waiting for traditional publishing companies(or 3rd party companies) to add “extras” to the reading experience(artwork, for instance). To create new revenue streams. What i mean, is that you would be reading a physical or digital book, and there are prompts throughout the book that you can access for additional content(you could scan with your smart phone or reader or tablet or physically enter online/computer) that could be anything from artwork to animation to audio of characters voices(not just one voice for all characters) to photos to links of author input at different points in story(background, inspiration, explanation, etc), input of customer/fan comments, music, access to exclusive content(short background stories of characters, for instance)…the sky is the limit, really. When you buy/rent a dvd one expects additional content, why not a book. There are many books i would pay a couple of bucks for additional content.(shrug)

I’ve been keeping my eye on tablet technologies…it would be cool to have an affordable e-reader and have access to internet. We’ll see…

  8. June 1, 2012 at 9:24 am

Morning! Rainy here today. We needed it.

I think i’ve seen every episode of season 1 of LOST GIRL at least 3-4 times. It’s my “comfort show”, meaning it entertains and lifts me up every time. The first STAR WARS is my comfort movie by the way. I think i catch something new in the LOST GIRL dialogue every new time i watch it. The writers are so good, they don’t pander or cut corners and are very smart, witty. I love the “besty” friendship Bo and Kenzie have. You don’t see many shows where two woman are the leads that carry the show. And i do like Dyson. It’s rare that i really like the hunky male lead, but i do, he’s great. It’s like the show runners of this show read my mind about everything i don’t like about UF right now and said, “we’ll correct that for you sir, right away sir.”(grin)

Suzanne:you get to be on a panel with TIME POWERS? Too cool!

ALyss:Hi MissThang. I don’t have a web camera, but i think they are pretty cheap. I[‘ve never skyped. I knew you would love LOST GIRL. I’m glad you like KENZIE. I’ve seen some message boards about the show, and from what i can gather, i think there are some Bo/Lauren shippers who don’t like Kenzie because she seems to favor Dyson. I don’t think the writers are making Kenzie anti-gay or anything, she just likes Dyson more i think. She seems ok with Bo being gay/Bi, i think it’s more that she and Lauren are polar opposites, Lauren crowds her girlfriend status with Bo, and she doesn’t trust Lauren’s motives in relationship to the ASH. Besides, three’s a crowd;i LOVE when it’s just Bo and Kenzie girlfriend scenes.(makes me pine for what could have/should have been with Rachel&Ivy). Sorry about the Ulcers. Eesh!

    • June 4, 2012 at 1:15 pm

I also think that Kenzie’s distrust of Lauren is more to do with Lauren being who she is. I was surprised that my Other Half actually didn’t like Lauren either, and felt that she was playing Bo. (Which I think she was in a way). And, Dyson is also more open to Kenzi, which makes Kenzi be more open to him too. I do love the Kenzie Bo scenes as well. Kenzi is so well written, I have to say she steals the show when she’s on. I didn’t like it when she had a boyfriend. But he was a douche.

    Hey everybody,

Still alive. I thought to tell you all that I now finally have a connection strong enough to do skype with. πŸ˜‰
Anyway so. What’s new in my world? Well, I have a stomach ulcer. I’ve been having terrible stomach cramps and couldn’t stand it anymore. Went to doc, had smoe tests done and wham. stomach ulcer thank you very much.

I also got a kindle. which is sort of weird. I’;m not sure whether I like it yet but hey, I guess I’ll get used to it. πŸ™‚

    What’s new?

Oh, and I finished watching lost girl. LOVED IT!!!

    • May 31, 2012 at 5:29 pm

Oh my God! She’s still alive! I’m sorry about the ulcer…it sometimes comes with the rat race. Are you just going to treat it with a change in your diet? I love Lost Girl too, it’s my current favorite show. How are things in your life? You are still together with Other Half?

      • June 1, 2012 at 12:46 am

yes I am, lol, and I still owe you an email. πŸ˜‰

OH and I are still together. I think it’s going to be this way for a while. *shrug* we don’t really have forces pulling us apart and inevitably, life is better with her than without. I take every day as a gift, you never know what’s going to happen. But it’s good. πŸ™‚

The ulcer sucks. I can’t really change my diet because there isn’t much that I can take out (lalalalalala don’t hear the word coffeee, lalalalalala)

Lost girl was AWESOME. Absolutely awesome. We loved it.
I loved the emotions and the interplay between all the characters. I love Kenzie (IS OUR LITTLE SUCCUBUS GONNA STAY IN BED FOREVER?!) and I like Dysan. Naturaly, I love Lauren. That woman is so awkward she makes me look like a professional lover.

    • May 31, 2012 at 6:16 pm

Oh, feel better. I love Lost Girl too.

      • June 1, 2012 at 12:39 am

        It’s awesome. Absolutely awesome.

  10. May 31, 2012 at 9:24 am

Suzanne—so you’ll be signing and giving away ARCs—that’s so cool! Chat up everybody and anybody(like i need to tell you that*grin), you never know what might come of it. Your book is eligible for Amazon’s 4 for 3 program(buy 3 books, get the 4th for free), that’s very cool. Nice price point($9.99).
MUD—Your probably on your flight to Carolina right now. Have fun!

I ordered HBO from my cable company yesterday. I’ll keep it through summer to watch TRUEBLOOD, catch up on season 2 of GAME OF THRONES, and try new shows VEEP, GIRLS, and the new Aaron Sorkin(West Wing, THe Social Network) show, NEWSROOM.

    • May 31, 2012 at 6:15 pm

You are right though. I was talking to James Blaylock at a steampunk thing as few weeks ago. This morning he emailed me and was like “you want to be on a panel with me and Tim Powers” – um, yes.

I’m glad my book is $10 and I don’t care that it’s not in hardcover. $10 is a decent price for a book these days. For awhile B&N had it on preoder for $5 but that’s over now.

  11. May 30, 2012 at 7:54 pm

Oh my gosh Suzanne, you’re an actual author now! I’m so excited for you. I can’t wait to see .your books on the shelf. You’ve worked hard for it

    • May 31, 2012 at 6:16 pm

Thanks, it’s getting to that scary exciting point now.

  12. May 30, 2012 at 6:07 pm

Gave my final okay for book 1 — it’s off to print. Got my official packet ofr my trip to BEA. It’s silly, but I’m super excited I get meal money. I lived on $10/day + beef jerky and crackers at RT and it just feels like I’ve hot the big time, lol. I have my book 2 edits. They’ve changed the title. 😦 But it’s growing on me. Not sure when I can anounce it. The cover sounds like it should be cool tho. A bulk of the book takes place on an airship – I think the art department is having fun w/ that. Anyway, I lve for NYC for 2 whole days on Sun (have to be back in my chair at 8 am wed. le sigh). Anyway, I’m here. Miss you. ~hugs~

    • May 30, 2012 at 8:54 pm

Oooo, you’re going to NY? Conference? Have fun.

      • May 31, 2012 at 8:59 am

BEA is a giant professional book trade show. I only get to go for two days b/c of work — but I get to go, it’s really quite exciting to be chosen by mu publisher to go. I even have a signing (I’ll be signing ARCs but it’s still exciting).

I’ve only been once back in 2008 when it was in LA and they let bloggers in for free. I went for 5 hours, most of which was spent standing in line for Kim Harrison’s signing.

  13. May 30, 2012 at 5:49 pm

Seems you were right Tony. Maybe the CW wanted her to drop Jenks because it would be so expensive to create the special effects.

    • May 30, 2012 at 8:52 pm

They invested in 8 filmed pilots, and picked 5 to keep(all original, rather than buying from someone else, ie like syfy did in buying Lost Girl, so more expensive investment) and 3 of those are genre shows(Arrow – crime fighter/Green Arrow;Cult – supernatural/crime;and modern reboot of Beauty And The Beast – supe romance). Plus, a Sex And The City prequel, and a new show about a young doctor(name escapes me…?)Remember when i said 2 months ago i read an article in Entertainment Weekly and the CW executives were excited about their 8 pilots they were working on for Fall? None of which were the Hollow’s project which they didn’t mention. I was worried then, but when they anounced 3 new genre shows i had a feeling it wasn’t going to happen. I doubt if they are going to keep it alive either – afterall, that writer/developer is going to want to get paid and/or move on to something more promising. That’s the way it goes – fish or cut bait. (note: although, CULT is a show that has kicked around for awhile, apparently, so it is possible someone else will give it a try. I’m dissappointed, but it was going to be tough to do well – pixies, fairies, werewolves, magic, everafter, alot of special effects/$ and a big rotating cast. Also, what is it about? The book is a 5-6 day rush we read once a year, what would it be every week, 16-22 episodes? Crime solving? Supernatural business, politics? Romance? WOuld people get sick of Rachel on a weekly basis? Poeple think it would be easy to convert to a weekly series, but honestly, i think it would be tough, you’d almost have to reinvent it i think(shrug)

  14. May 29, 2012 at 1:43 pm

Hi Tony. Send me an email anytime, I love hearing from my NaSty friends. There doesn’t seem to be as many of us now. No vacation plans. I’m in full fledged money saving mode right now. It’s funny that you guys have been in the 90’s, so have we. Its hot. I drove up to the mountains in NE Alabama Saturday to look around. Very beautiful but really isolated. I’m not sure about that now.

    • May 29, 2012 at 2:47 pm

You should get a place in a college town somewhere. More hustle and bustle. Is there anywhere that would meet those qualifications?(ie cooler mountain area, college town)

      • May 29, 2012 at 5:08 pm

University of Tennessee is in the mountains, and the homes are pretty inexpensive but they have horrendous property taxes. I have 1 year and ten months to plan where to go, if I go.

  15. May 29, 2012 at 10:25 am

Hey. πŸ˜€ MUD–how is retirement going? Not that your retired from everything, I know. I mean, the university job. SUZANNE–getting excited? Your book’s pub date is only a couple of month’s away. MARSHA–how’s it going? It’s been in the 90s here, so i can only imagine what it’s like there. ALYSSA–hi, girl. How’s it shakin’ bacon? ‘Scuse me, you don’t eat bacon. JENN–How is Canada this time of year? Hot? Pretty? Any vacation plans? EVRABODY ELSE–Hi, long time, no see. I need to make the rounds and email people, it’s easy to lose touch…

THE IMMORTAL RULES by Julie Kagawa: the first in a new YA series. It’s a dystopian, post apocalyptic vampire story told from the POV of a 17-year-old girl. At nearly 500 pages, the story has the feel of a long epic story. Allison Sekemoto is an orphaned human scrounging on the streets with others like her in a closed, walled-off vampire city(New Covington) somewhere in America. It has been 100 years since a deadly virus has killed off most humans and vampires alike, with some vampires and humans transforming into feral “rabids.” Some vampires have built walled cities to protect themselves(and the humans that they feed from). I’m not giving anything away when i say that Allison is eventually transformed into a vampire and flees New Covington, running form humans, rabids, and vampires. She eventually meets up with a travelling band of humans who are on a trek to a human-only haven called “New Eden.” She hides her true identity(they travel at night) and begins to travel with them. It’s interesting to see Allison discover “the outside world” as she comes to grips with her new instincts, desires, while also trying to work out “what kind of monster” she is going to become. In addition, she is developing feelings, for the first time, for a boy(who happens to be human). I’m going to follow this series to see what happens. It’s kinda like SKing’s STAND, but with the POV from a new Vampire. I’d give it a B+/A-.

    • May 29, 2012 at 10:49 am

Not until the 31st and then I’ll be in a deep funk. I loved my job, until they screwed me. Not working every day for 2 months, and holidays and weekends without pay again. Thursday I’m flying out to ConCarolina’s to see the Magical Word’s blog crew and hit Faith with THE PRANK. 40 pieces of different sorts of thongs…

      • May 29, 2012 at 1:35 pm

I can hardly wait for my retirement Mud…April 1st of 2014! I hope you enjoy it more than you think. Ever thought about starting a plant care and rental business? I pay for this every month in two of my federal buildings and I know banks and such use them.

      • May 29, 2012 at 2:49 pm

Carolina – that sounds fun. You’re going to have more long weekends to play with now. You’ll have to post some pictures.

    • May 29, 2012 at 1:44 pm

Too much work. Been there, done that when I graduated as an undergrad. I hate book work! I can’t legally retire for another 15 years, but the TD is going to subsidize me. Wish I wrote better.

      • May 29, 2012 at 5:11 pm

I think you write well. I also bet that the more you write, the better you’ll get at it. You’ll have time.

  16. May 26, 2012 at 10:23 am

On second thought: I’m thinking, now, that KH’s post was meant to give a head’s up that the CW passed on the Hollow’s tv show. I think, calling it “FanFic” was what confused people(confused me, i know)…what made me rethink it was the suitcase in the story…who or “what” was leaving was cleared up when she woke up, everything was at it should be and she was “okay” with it. (shrug) That’s what i’m thinking…

OLD MAN’S WAR by John Scalzi: SciFi/Military fiction. Actually, this author is a native of southern Ohio, as it turns out. I’ve heard of this book, but never got around to reading it before. I believe there are 4 books in this series, but the first could be read as a stand-alone. In the future man has learned how to travel to other galaxies and habitabal(spell?) planets where we encounter aliens both friendly and hostile. So, a permanent off-world military is needed. Here’s the interesting part: the military is made up of 75-year-old voluntary enlistees. I know!(laugh) Although it is a closely guarded secret, it is “assumed” that somehow the military has found a way to reverse the aging process(why else would they want retirees). From there, it gets interesting. Surprisingly, it is touching with romance elements as well. I’m looking forward to reading the follow-up – The Ghost Brigades. I highly reccomend. I’d give it a solid A.

KH’s Drama: We’ve talked about FanFic often enough around here. Me? If someone makes $ off of it – Bad – if it’s for fun only – perfectly fine.(shrug) I’m not going to join the fun police and start handing out tickets to people like our Kylie for writing Beetlejuice FanFic.

  19. May 25, 2012 at 10:53 am

Hi everyone. Looks quiet in here so I hope you are all out having fun.We are going to be so hot down here this weekend I don’t think that yard work is on the agenda. I’ve been playing with the idea of moving a bit north up into the mountains when I retire and Sandy and I may drive up to the foothills and just look around. Have fun.

    • May 25, 2012 at 11:02 am

Hi Marsha. I don’t blame you for possibly moving.(retiring?) Heat is for the young(laugh!) I do like ocean breezes though(hot and cold). Are you thinking north Alabama or “north-north”, as in another state? Tennessee? Kentucky?

      • May 25, 2012 at 1:15 pm

Hi Tony. I was looking at the mountains of either NC or TN, but after researching their tax laws that is probably not going to work, both states have very high property taxes and/or tax retirement income. Bad as this state’s politics are, they don’t tax retirement and properety taxes are very low. I still have one year and 10 months to decide, but who’s counting?

GRIMM – season finale last week. I don’t know if anyone else is watching or not. I’ve been wondering all season long about how the girlfriend was going to figure into the story. Two big cliff hangers for next year. LOST GIRL tonight features the leader of the Dark Fey – the “Morgann”? Is that what they call her? – which is always cool. I do like when Bo has to work with the Dark. I’m officially done with that freaking Gazeebo project i was working on with my oldest nephew(laugh). Went out to dinner with dad and sister and her family last night…i had angel hair pasta…Mmmmmmm….New TRUEBLOOD season in 20 days!

    • May 21, 2012 at 7:15 pm

I’m still loving LOST GIRL. I found a few of teh GRIMM stories to drag a bit, but I really like the relationship between Grimm and his werewolf(?) friend. It could use an occassional funny episode, LOST GIRL’s Kensie does this so well.

Hellooooooo. I’m liking Nikita right now. I think someone told them to “lighten up” and smile every now and again. It has more of a roving band of friends/semi-criminals/revolutionaries right now, kinda like LEVERAGE, but much more violent. HI ALYSSA!!!(waves) It’s about as beautiful as it gets here in Ohio – warm, not hot, sunny, low humidity. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh…Still loving LOST GIRL, even with it’s low rent, low budget effects. It’s a true Urban Fantasy, but like alot of genre shows, i wish they would find a way to film in a downtown setting every once in awhile. Some shows, like FRINGE, find a way to do it. I mean, not “everything” happens in the suburbs LOST GIRL. GRIMM is supposed to be filmed in Portland, Oregon, but it mostly feels like we are in the woods of Vancouver(many Hollywood shows are filmed there). Fun radio interview w/KH, Jocelynn Drake, and Vicki Peterson. I’m a fan of JD and looking forward to her new series. I’ve only read a short story from VP and didn’t like it at all, and from what i can gather from customer reviews, i’m not interested in checking her books out(maybe i’ll change my mind*shrug). It’s interesting KH would reference Bewitched as a show that was an early UF influence(as well as “I Dream Of Genie”). I know when i asked her to name her idea of a “Kick-Ass heroine” she named Sondra Bullock. Rachel does seem like a refugee from a 1970s tv show sometimes, or a newer Rom-Com. I don’t mind that at all…mostly. It’s just that when it comes to interpersonal relationships, those models are antiquated, especially compared to most examples we see on television and film.(shrug) Has anybody been watching the newest Sherlock Holmes on PBS(from the BBC)? Sundays. We only get 3 new ones(90 minutes long). They are very good! I especially liked the first one. The second, was an update on “The Hound Of The Baskervilles”. Fun stuff. Speaking of: I see that ABC is going to introduce(next fall) INSPECTOR – a modern update of Sherlock Homes starring Johnny Lee Miller as SH and Lucy Liu as Watson! Starting to look forward to fifth season of TRUEBLOOD. I gotta order HBO for the summer. I can also watch the second season of GAME OF THRONES as well. As well as new shows GIRLS and VEEP. I’m thirsty for a cold beer(laugh) You know what i mean? I don’t normally buy beer for the house, but i think i’m going to head to TRADER JOES and buy me some beer.(grin)

The CW Network has announced their plans for the Fall 2012 tv shedule. Nikita survived the cut(surprisingly). The Secret Circle, and Ringer were canceled. Of the eight pilot shows they have been developing, 5 have been bought, and three others were passed on(The Hollows project hasn’t progressed to the pilot stage yet;hasn’t been cast or filmed). Now, i guess, they will look at other projects(which include THE HOLLOW’S adaptation) and decide whether they will be moved forward in development(director, cast hired for pilot, writers, budget, etc) and film a pilot(which would put them in line for a late season tv addition or Fall 2013). I think. I’m not a Hollywood insider or anything here(grin). We’ll see…

I just got done reading the manga adaptation of Gail Carriger’s SOULLESS. YEN PRESS did a terrific job! It’s beautiful. The manga form isn’t ideal for Ms. Carriger’s wordy witticisms(there’s only so much room, afterall) and Alexia isn’t as full-bodied and blessed with a strong nose and coloring as in the books(although they sure didn’t skimp on the size of her breasts!)(grin)Still, the artwork is terrific and, next to a film adaptation, this manga form is the next best thing(although i wish an accompanying voice track would be included. Wouldn’t that be cool?). 227 action-packed pages. This form is so much better artistically in telling a story than standard, American graphic novels(not that i haven’t seen some great graphic novels, i have). What i’m talking about is these graphic novels we’ve been seeing in recent years presenting UrbanFantasy stories(Jim Butcher, KH, Patricia Briggs, etc.). Most are not very well done. Plus, YEN PRESS specializes in retelling and adapting previously published stories(like James Paterson’s Maximum Overdrive series) so you don’t have to suffer a half-assed UF original short story. Anyhoo, i reccomend. A.

SUZANNE: Have you heard of a new YA called THE IMMORTAL RULES by Julia Kagawa? It’s been getting some buzz(review in Huffington Post and has been optioned for a movie adaptation). It’s a post-Apocolyptic YA about humans, vampires, and zombies. I know, I know – another one. Looks interesting though;I got it on hold at the library.

HeyHey! DEADLOCKED by Charlaine Harris(12th in Sookie Stackhouse series). This series is winding down;Ms. Harris, i believe, has said the 14th will be the last. Her last few books in this groundbreaking supernatural romance series have been plagued by poor fan and critic reviews. I can see what everyone else sees…yes, the stories meander, seemingly aimlessly, around and around, with little interesting story plotting. Too many characters, too little action…yes, i know. But i have soft spot in my heart for these books. Imagine HEART OF DIXIE with a supernatural populace(laugh). Some may find that annoying – i get it. The juxtoposition of down-home, southern humor with supernatural violence, politics, may rub people the wrong way. But it’s different, unique, and i always have to judge positvely for people who “do different.” Or at least, try. Unlike previous books, there is an actual “who-done-it” murder that Sookie gets pulled into solving. She’s a waitress, not an investigator, and i always thought the inability to give her a clear purpose always hurt this series, hence the aimless meandering. Why couldn’t she have done both? Anyway, in this one she does have a purpose and there is an actual story. There is a dizzying amount of casual encounters with bit characters that have nothing to do with the case, mystery, but i didn’t mind so much. You gotta roll with the style. This book is getting hammered in customer reviews, partly because her vampire romances have been cooling these last few books and you CANNOT piss off romance readers!(laugh) But, i’m okay with this development;in the end, a mortal/vampire romance seems kinda stupid. Fun for the short term, dumb for the long term. Unrealistic. I like that this series isn’t going to end with a presumptive HEA – last book: we wave goodbye to young Sookie and her hunky vampire, presuming that the future will be all rainbows and clear skies – but is going to leave us with, seemingly, a more realistic, clear-headed Sookie. Anyhoo, I give this one a solid B. UNDERWORLD:AWAKENING: I finally watched this newest installment. I really liked it! Chris Holden-Reid(Dyson on LOST GIRL) plays a pivotal role in this one!(surprise!) There is no romance in this one. Just action scene after action scene. The special effects are terrific and Kate Beckinsale has never been better. I’d reccomend, if you haven’t seen. I’d give it an A. Season finale of VAMPIRE DIARIES tonight. Yes, i’m surprised i’m watching this now too.(laugh)

        May 11, 2012 at 9:42 am

Springsteen was an important influence on me as a young man. I’ve seen him live 3 times. I haven’t heard that Eric Church song, i’ll have to chase it down. Springsteen’s lyric-heavy music, so visual, is perfect for country interpretations, if that ever happens(say, for a country tribute album, for instance)

TRUEBLOOD:Marsha, i discovered that my friend who gave me an extra copy of Trueblood, season 1, somehow missplaced the last disc containing the last 5 episodes!!??? I’ll try to locate. Grrrrrr. I do, however, have all discs and episodes for season 2&3, so i may just end up sending them all anyway(although it would be better if yu could watch the entire season 1.

Mud, sorry to hear about the job (or should I be happy for you?)

So I can sort of go to BEA but I’ll have to miss some important stuff. It’s been kinda sucky. Missy and I are off to a Steampunk con on Sat. Should be interesting.

I just got “God Save the Queen” — it’s 2012, Queen Victoria is a Vampire and still in power, looks fun.

Hoo! Man! I spent the entire weekend helping my nephew refurbish a gazeebo(spell?) at a nursing home for his Eagle Scout project. We had a ton of help, but it was a JOB, I’m tellin’ ya’. I’m still sore. TRICKED by Kevin Hearne: 4th in The Iron Druid Series. Again, set in Arizona – northern Arizona, close to Flagstaff area. This time, the story revolves around the Navajo, so you know it’s going to incorporate the Trickster God, Coyote, as well as the Dark Magic of the Skinwalkers. I think i’ve read different interpretations of both of these 6-8 times. Still, i like the characters and the emphasis of ‘Earth Magic’ in the story/series. Not alot of mystery, surprise, to the story here. Again, i have to compare UF/paranormal series to tv;the emphasis is on the characters NOT the plot. As i’ve said before about this author, i have to take away his ‘man card'(or should i say, pig card?) for being overly circumspect in describing the beautiful women who populate his series. I have no idea what they look like, only they he thinks they look beautiful(“take it from me reader, here’s another beautiful woman – this one’s even naked! – but i don’t dare describe her. Oh okay, she has dark hair, how’s that?”)(laugh) I think, actually, this would play better on tv. Fun, enjoyable, although the skin walker tale isn’t overly interesting here(i’ve read better versions, frankly). I’d give it a B/B+. I did not see AVENGERS, but i here it’s pretty great. I’m surprised, it seems like there would be too many characters and not enough time to incorporate them, but i heard it works. LOST GIRL on tonight and it looks like it’s a Kenzie-heavy episode. Yeah!

    May 4, 2012 at 10:03 am

HeyHey—I’m liking the Kevin Hearne book so far;more later. It’s the rare UF that is written by a man w/a male lead. The story is set in Northern Arizona this time around. Suzanne would probably recognize the locales. It’s set close to the Navajo reservation. I’m very cool with stories w/female leads, it’s just that UF writers, unlike their counterparts in tv/film, refuse to create strong, modern, female leads. Look at television: Nikita, Detective Beckett(Castle), Olivia(Fringe), Dr. Brennan(Bones), female leads in shows as diverse as Warehouse13, Psyche…these are all actresses who are currently playing characters that are asexual, i.e. leaders, alpha-in-charge, problem-solving characters who could easily have been played by men and, in fact, were played by male actors just 20 years ago. Olivia is the FBI agent with the gun, she’s the one packing heat, the decision-maker, shot-caller. Same with Detective Beckett. Relationships don’t devalue them, nor define them, but uplift them, enrich them. OK, end of mini-rant.

Going to be hot and wet around here this weekend. The weather, I mean(grin). I may be helping one of my nephews with a boy scout project. GRIMM, NIKITA, and FRINGE tonight. Fringe has been renewed for a final 13 episode season. No news on NIKITA yet, but it probably isn’t going to survive. The CW has a bunch of shows in development. A SEX IN THE CITY prequel reboot, a handful of genre shows…The new SHERLOCK is back for 3 tv movies starting sunday. Be good!…

    • May 5, 2012 at 8:21 am

Hi Tony. I’m hoping to stay home this weekend. Not only is it going to be humid and in the 90’s but it is a Talladega weekend and we live only around 35 miles from the track. We are inundated with rednecks in mototr homes each NASCAR event. Just coming home from work yesterday was a joy, and don’t even think of going grocery shopping at a Wally World :-). How is eveyone doing?

Strange weather here. We are supposed to get record heat today. Virtually no snow this winter, no Spring to speak of, and it appears we have “sprung” fast-forward to mid-summer. Bugs. Lotsa bugs.

I’m enjoying this last season of EUREKA(Syfy). The storylines have a bit more dramatic “oomph!” to them this year. Looking forward to WAREHOUSE13(Syfy) next month. As well as SUITS(USA). Anybody watch Suits? It’s about a small-time con-artist who has a special skill. He not only has total recall, a photogrphic memory, but he understands what he is reading completely. He is currently posing as a lawyer at a big-time firm. Fun, sexy. USA Network knows how to do fun, sexy. I just got TRICKED(Kevin Hearne) from the library(4th in series). Set in Arizona(at least the previous 3 were), with a concentration in Celtic gods/myths mixed with magic and supernatural entities. Heavy with humor and magic, sex is mostly behind closed doors, male lead POV.

    • May 3, 2012 at 5:02 pm

Hi Tony. You don’t even want to know what the weather is like down here already. It was 70 when I left for work at 5:00 am. I hope I survive the summer. I hate the heat. I was looking at the May releases on All Things Urban Fantasy and I thought about you. It might be my imagination but it seems there are more male writers in UF and more male characters I would assume. I can’t remember shich one it was though.

HeyHey! I didn’t know if i clicked on comment that it would expand. Der. I thought i couldn’t comment. I’m loving LOST GIRL as well. So many shows ask the viewer to “endure” the drama, one awful murder after another, angst and deception in interpersonal relationships. That’s cool, but it’s nice when a show only asks you sit down and let them “entertain” you. It’s “fun” in a genre that often isn’t fun, except for shows aimed at the young. Book:THE DEMON TRAPPER’S DAUGHTER by Jana Oliver. I saw where Ilona Andrews reccomended her and thought i’d give it a try. It’s a YA aimed at girls. I could only get a little ways into it before i knew it wasn’t for me. Not that i don’t read the occassional YA, but sometimes it just isn’t going to work out. Story set in Atlanta by the way. SCARLET? Hmmmm…MissE is starting to read more(she just finished THE HUNGER GAMES trilogy). Marsha:i’ll send you the first season of TRUEBLOOD to see if you like it before sending you more. The DVDs didn’t cost me anything so don’t worry about $(friend gave me extra copies). Chased off two UGGGGGGLLLLYYYYY possums digging in my yard yesterday(shudder). Usually you don’t see them during the day. They were digging up the rabbit i had buried last month. I didn’t know possums ate such things(double shudder). Saw CAPTAIN AMERICA last week. Pretty good! RedBox is now offerring DOWNTON ABBEY(PBS/BBC);i still haven’t seen. The new SHERLOCK HOLMES(PBS/BBC) is back on tv starting sunday(2nd season). Waiting on new books by Charlaine Harris and Kevin Hearne and the manga version of SOULLESS(Gail Carriger). I think GCarriger’s series would make a fun, campy tv show/movie. Have you seen the trailer for that new Sleeping Beauty movie starring Kristin Stewart and Charlize Theron and Chris Helmsworth(spell?)? Looks very good! Be good…

        April 20, 2012 at 10:03 am

WordPress is so weird – it wouldn’t let me post a new message, but it will let me reply(i think). This may all be for waste, but here goes…MISSION IMPOSSIBLE:GHOST PROTOCAL – this was a fun movie to watch. It was a straightforward plot i could follow, which was nice. A lot of action, some humor. Really good. THE PRESIDENT’S VAMPIRE by Christopher Farnsworth: second in a series about a vampire magically tied to the position of President of the United States. He’s kind of a personal 007 for the president, except this vampire is hardly sauve or a lady’s man. He’s a killer, a stern character bound by magic and duty. More of a vampire equivalent of Jason Bourne I’d say, or a vampiric version of Jason Stratham, a one-man wrecking ball. He has a young human handler as well. And a female vampire child that shows up from time to time. Since we are talking the presidency here, the 007 refernce is apt because the story always involves an end-of-the-world conspiracy scenario. It’s in 3rd person, but the author capriciously jumps from character to character – main characters, supporting characters, bit characters who only appear for a few pages, good guys, bad guys. I don’t know about you, but if it’s in 3rd person, I’d prefer that the POV sticks with a few main characters, and ‘maybe’ the occassional supporting character. Anyhoo, it was an entertaining read. Different. I’d give it a B/B+.

Be good! Have a good weekend! 😎

*WordPress is driving me crazy. They changed it up again;I can’t figure out how to post again even when i sign in????

Anyhoo:If this works: FAIR GAME by Patricia Briggs:I like these characters, always have. It’s ostensibly a supernatural romance series – werewolf, at that. So, one can expect a lot of uber-wish fulfillment. In lesser hands it could be really annoying. I like that PB uses 3rd person and gives us different viewpoints and that there is a tight plot that focuses the story. So, the story doesn’t wander, it’s purposeful. It’s so nice to read a supe romance/UF that is plot driven. It is, however, a serial murder story. For me, serial stories always suffer a bit from two things: the expected justice/punishment never comes close to matching the crime, and the crimes here are particular awful;secondly, serial murder cases follow patterns, so there is some predictability(i won’t elaborate in case you haven’t read yet). Still, I appreciate that the book is about ‘something’ instead of an ongoing relationship story. I’ve always liked the two main characters, Charles and Anna. Sometimes paranormal romances can be too much, which is part of the appeal to many. I like that Charles is stoic, but as someone who has been alone so long, constantly surprised by how much he loves his wife. He’s not annoying. And Anna is witty, funny, and wise beyond her years. The end of this book signals a change in the Alpha/Omega universe that will also effect the Mercy Thompson universe, so that will be interesting to watch. I liked this one a lot more than PB’s last, RIVER MARKED. I’d give it a solid A.

I haven’t read this series and I’m surprised. I really like werewolves. I think they might be making a “comeback”.

I have my botanist stuf (it’s cute, but getting into the corset will require a tow truck with a winch), PJ’s since I’m sharing a room with a couple of guys, office casual for pitching, something dressy, and jeans. I don’t even live that far. πŸ™‚

Mud, the sleepovers, not steampunk, you wear slippers and PJs and eat junk food and play truth or dare and win a kindle and all the cool crap we’re giving away.

Packing for RT is pretty hysterical. I have: 3 corsets, 3 pairs boots, 3 hats, a hatbox, 4 pairs gloves, a fan, a tiara, 2 facinators, a victorian nightgown, a bustle, a ball gown, and a pair of wings.

I hope everyone’s weekend went well. I woke up Easter morning to find a dead rabbit in my front yard. Talk about weird symbolism. I gotta bury the Easter Bunny today.

Lost girl tonight – last 2 episodes of first season. I’m so happy Syfy is going to start showing season 2 episodes this month. I bet they won’t show the entire season continuously though – they’ll probably break it up…show half through summer, then the rest in winter.

*I’m reading FAIR GAME by Patricia Briggs right now. It’s an Alpha&Omega book(3rd in series). It’s good. More later…

I’m writing a book called Don’t Interruptus. I’ve been given prompts over the years to try to help me write a sexy scene. None have worked out. My latest prompt was honeymoon tickle/scratch. So, they are in bed in a lovely hotel. She sighs into a caress, a tickle. More tickles. Too many tickles for just one lover’s hand. She looks at the bedbugs that have crawled over her body. Scratch. *Sigh*

      • April 8, 2012 at 10:05 am

Ewwww Mud. Reminds me of a whole month of extended inspections of one of my tenants because they found one, that’s 1, bedbug in their space. It should be noted that it was dead and most likely came in on one of their employees who shall we say is less than fastidious, but still I had to do inspections twice a week for a month. I can’t wait to get out of this line of work.

Hah! I have been thinking a lot lately about sexy scenes in my writing…i think i’m better at sexy scenes that aren’t dominated by passion, if that makes sense(laugh). You know, a little bit of humor and intimacy in a situation w/people who are very familiar, comfortable with each other(shrug). I bet, actually, you could write a sexy scene around a couple discussing bed bugs(laugh!). Go with your strengths, I say.

Suz/MUD—you guys have fun! So, suze, if you’re now the ‘captain’ does that mean MUD has been given a promotion in rank? Let’s all think of an appropriate rank for MUD…Really, I think it’s the captain’s perogative to award rank and assign duties. I think you should demand everyone to call you ‘Madam Captain.’ Carry a big sword and shout occasionally, have an assistant at your side writing furiously in a notepad, saying “yes, ma’am, absolutely Madam Captain, I’ll get right on that, ma’am.” MissE would love an excuse for a sleepover(she’s in Florida w/her family right now), she’s not a shy wallflower(grin). She would demand to go to the American Girl store though!(laugh)

Outside, it is about as beautiful as Ohio gets right now. Sunny, green, no humidity(yet).

Oh my gosh it sounds like you guys are going to have so much fun! Send us a message from jail. Oops I mean the conference.

  46. April 6, 2012 at 12:20 pm

I want to do the sleepover, but it won’t be in Steampunk. Early Springer spaniel. Best I can do is my Botanist garb. Working on my leather bound drawing book and mini herbarium book. Kind of fun

So it looks like I’m running the whole steampunk track for RT. The captain got sick and asked me to step up. I need one more steampunk outfit. I thought Friday would be my day to go have fun. Oh well, lol. I still have to fix my nightgown for the sleepover, finish the sleepover goodies, pack, and make special cookies for the tea party.

Can’t wait to see Mud tho.

Tony, wish you lived closer. I’d sneak Miss Elizabeth into the sleepover.

The weather here in Ohio is beautiful…sun shining. I hope it’s nice wherever you are. I need to get out and do some yard work. Be good and have a nice weekend! P.S. My one and only remaining blog post on my Antonio’s Place WordPress site – the Hollow’s movie casting(remember that?*grin) – has been blowing since the last book came out. I think it got 53 views in one day alone this past week!? I suppose I need to update it and clean it up(it will probably be the last time i do it if the tv show makes it on air). I had someone from Poland ask me to cast Matalina and Marshall. I also need to cast new characters from APB(Wayde, Nina, for example) and I need to cast Daryl(I forgot about her! People google search her all the time).

    (*SPOILER*SPOILER*)

I had this idea over the weekend: that Rachel Morgan’s human father who worked in the I.S. was actually Trent’s father(in APB there is a scene where Trent is talking w/Rachel about how his mother used to secretly be a runner and died in Rachel’s late father’s company). I floated this idea to KH on the spoiler page and got this one word reply: ‘No.’ (shrug) I thought it was a cool idea. I thought of it because i rented a movie last week – FANBOYS – that was about a small group of Star Wars-loving fans and early in the movie they are discussing Luke and Leia being sweet on each other early and then it’s revealed later that they are brother and sister. Humans can mate with elves. It would be kind of a cool symmetry, the two characters being sorta related(Rachel’s biological father being Takata of course)especially since r&T haven’t gone too far in their relationship yet.(shrug) ‘No’ means no though.(laugh)

KH said on her DramaPage that she is definitely going to stretch the series to 13. I always thought the ’13th’ was a possible floater book, like detailing the turn. I was never interested in a prequel book. In the tv series – if it makes it to the air – i’m sure will have flashbacks to that time. The continuity would get screwy if she wrote about it in a book(ie the book would follow the series). Not that thats the reason i’m sure. Still, it would be fun to see flashbacks to see how certain characters operated pre-turn. I hope this means the last books will end on an interesting plot/story, the last few books have been ‘slight’ in that department. And maybe it gives her time to introduce a romantic alternative to Trent. There is nothing duller than a slow multi-book crawl towards one, and only one, romantic ending. Give the character, and the reader, some options I say. Spice it up. The ‘vampire years’ of the early books was the highpoint for me(vamps and werewolves) and KH has said the last book would be heavy on vamps and Ivy, so maybe this is a good thing…? I’m a bit tired of the witch-demon-elven triangle we’ve been focusing on. It’s like 3 sides of the same triangle. I hope we are moving on from that in the last 2-3 books. So—-good news, hopefully!(or it’s an April fool’s joke*grin)

Did anybody see THE HUNGER GAMES? I haven’t. Just wondering.

    • April 2, 2012 at 5:58 pm

Come on Tony. Kim has given so many clues that we know how things will end up, so whether it’s 12 or 13 makes no difference to me.

HeyHey–i remembered my password! Yeah me!

NICE GIRLS DON’T BITE THEIR NEIGHBORS by Molly Harper: Let me tell ya, the cover art was even more embarrasing than the title. I felt like stuffing it into my coat pocket when i left the library.(rolls eyes) This is the 4th(and last?) in the Jane Jameson series about a mousy children’s librarian in rural Kentucky who becomes a vampire. It’s a very light romance series, heavy on humor. It’s a fun change of pace. It’s not great, but the author is very funny, she has a real feel for dialogue and characters, awkward family situations, eclectic, odd characters that seem very real to me(my mom’s family is originally from Kentucky). Anyhoo—i reccomend if you are looking for a light read. I’d give it a B.

I found a LOST GIRL message/discussion board through Syfy Network and was surprised with some of the threads. One person complaining about the adult subject matter(girl, if you can figure out how to use a computer to complain about a tv show, surely you can figure out how to use the remote control to change channels…sheesh!). Also, there was a few threads complaining that they needed to get rid of the Kenzie character! WHAT!? She’s a fantastic character! I don’t get that one. I understand people would be in the Dyson camp or the Lauren camp – that makes sense. Some people complain that season 2 isn’t as good as season 1. (shrug) I have no way of judging that yet;Jenn says otherwise(she thought season2 is better). Love that show. I hope we don’t have long to wait for the next season. There is word that they’ll divide the second season into 2 parts here in AMerica. That makes sense, it’s what they do for other shows(Eureka, Warehouse13, Merlin, etc).

What a weird winter. I never even had to shovel snow from my driveway – not once! I can’t ever remember that.

    • March 26, 2012 at 2:31 pm

I really liked the latest Molly Harper book. Not as much as the first one though. As a daughter of the South I really relate to the family dynamics in the series. Sad but true. I also agree with you about Kenzie. I like her and think a show as dark as Lost Girl needs some comedy relief once in awhile.

(Tony) Hmmmm…i’m wondering how i can log in w/my ‘Antonio’ account and comment…? ‘I’m not a smart may-aaan.’

Did you read the info about the CW Hollow’s series on KH’s drama? Apparently it’s been optioned And bought. Everywhere i read about pilots being developed on the CW I never see the Hollow’s project being mentioned, but apparently they must be excited about it if they bought it. I like that they are not going to try to recreate the storylines from the book series. I don’t see how that would work given that the books are spaced 3-4 months apart and the stories have more of a feature film pacing lasting a few days to a week. I’m actually encouraged that the series could be fun, interesting. It would be kind of a bummer to see old storylines stretched over whole seasons knowing the eventual outcome. Plus, i imagine there will be more of a focus on supporting characters.

so, how’s it going?(grin) Still excited about basketball(I know, I’m alone in that excitement). FRINGE starts it’s run of 8 new episodes to close the season tonight. There is talk that it might be canceled. We’ll see. New NIKITA tonight as well. It may be canceled as well.

Anybody going to see THE HUNGER GAMES? I’ll probably wait for the DVD. Have a good weekend! 😎

Hi Alyssa! How are things going in your world?

      • March 22, 2012 at 3:04 pm

Don’t ask. I’ve finished playing that game of mine and it’s depressed me to hell and gone.
But, I’ve written a bigish article for the one website that I write for. πŸ˜€ A book I got an ARC of (Suzanne, are you listening…) and the author said that I can interview him too.
Now I’m stuck with coming up with profound questions. *facepalm*
        Any suggestions?!

    • March 22, 2012 at 3:22 pm

What kind of book is it?

  67. March 20, 2012 at 6:53 pm

Greatings from “I suck as a writer land”. I had no idea that my arcs would be printed off what I turned in in August. As we’re doing line edits, *so much* is being fixed. Mean while, there’s a few scathing reviews on goodreads about poor writing (also complaining about cover, not understanding why faeries are in their steampunk, etc). I don’t think people remember that a) ARCs are unfinished and uneditied b) there’s a real person who wrote that book, they have feelings and aren’t perfect. My copy edits are going really bad and I had to get an extension. Why did I want to be a writer again?

    • March 20, 2012 at 8:02 pm

You will always have people who think they know better than you do, Suzanne. When the finished book comes out it will be just fine. Do you get to respond to their comments?

    • March 21, 2012 at 9:25 am

Technology, and relative anonomity, have lead to a breakdown in the way people communicate. I don’t know if someone said this to me decades ago or if i read it or i paraphrased someone else’s words, but i always had this thought in my head about art – ‘there’s no such thing as a good art, or bad art, all art is subjective, it’s about what you like or dislike.’ That always comes back to me whether i’m criticizing or being criticized, whether i’m creating myself or experiencing someone else’s work – simply, do you like it or not.

So, the bumps in the road, are they for the second book in your new series? That first book isn’t going to be delayed is it? Hang in there…

  68. March 19, 2012 at 8:34 pm

It’s still a few weeks away!!!

  69. March 19, 2012 at 5:18 pm
