Marsha-chapter 1

“This cannot be happening to me” Nash Baskov repeated for the third time. “I’m lost! My pack and I run wild through these damn hills all the time and I’m freakin’ lost. Yep. And now I’m talking to myself. Just great.” He continued to speak to himself, silently this time “Go five miles past Occidental until you see an unpaved road on the right…just follow that road. You can’t miss it.” Right, he thought it’s pitch black on this road. I must have passed it.”
He was just about to turn around when he saw a light up ahead and off to the left. A little farther down the road he could smell the wonderful scents of cooking beef and, was that potatoes, through the open truck window. His stomach rumbled at the smell. He hadn’t gone far down the road when the headlights showed a dirt road leading off to the left and up into some dense trees. About half a mile further he entered a clearing, at least it would be a clearing if it wasn’t covered with cars and trucks of all makes and models.
At the end of this makeshift parking lot was his destination, an enormous log cabin structure with a tacky flashing neon sign “La Lupa” in hot pink and done in a script style, over the massive front doors. “Neon” he said, shaking his head. He parked his truck and getting out headed toward the front door. He stopped about four cars back from the entrance, distracted by a soft feminine giggle and a familiar scent. Hard to believe he could hear that giggle over the pounding base that was coming from the bar. Grinning he said “If this is how you spend your weekends, Jake, it’s no wonder you’re in such a shitty mood every Monday”
Jake Turner was not too happy about being interrupted in his seduction of a very pretty little blond, and it showed on his face when he turned to the speaker. The look of irritation was quickly replaced by one of nervousness when he saw nothing but a broad chest covered in a white cotton shirt. His eyes traveled up, almost everyone had to look up at Nash, and he visibly relaxed when he saw who was looking at him with one raised eyebrow. Jake blew out a relieved breath, “Damn Nash I’m glad it’s you.” He returned the grin and said, “I’ve never seen you here before. Are the Biagetti brothers about to get reamed a new one? If so can you wait about 20, uh, I mean 45 minutes”, he said quickly looking at the blonde. “I’d really like to see that.”
“Ten minutes ago I would have said yes for sure” Nash said. “Now I’ll wait and see how good the food is first. I’m really hungry so you take all the time you need” Trying not to laugh, he nodded his head at the young woman and walked on past a small group of people, humans from their smell, coming out the doors. Once inside the music turned out to be a live band with a pretty good lead singer belting out modern country tunes. He recognized the drummer and base guitarist as pack members. An over made-up hostess with dyed black hair cut in a short bob gave him an appreciative look over the podium she was standing behind and asked him if he was going to the bar or if he wanted a table. “Actually I’m here to speak to the owners” he said, “but I am hungry so I’ll take a table.”
“Oh. you must be Mr. Baskov. Dom mentioned that he was expecting you. If you’ll follow me please” What didn’t show on the other side of the podium was a very nice curvy little figure in too tight jeans and a red gingham shirt with rolled up sleeves, the un-tucked tail knotted under a generous chest, ala Daisy Duke. The fact that the top buttons were unbuttoned made the view from his height even better. Looking around, it seemed to be the standard uniform for all the waitresses as well.
The hostess led him through an obstacle course of busy tables and bar stools to the backside of the bar where he found Dominic Biagetti talking to a heavyset older man with a bar rag thrown over his left shoulder. “Keep an eye on the vodka tonight John, martinis seem to be on the menu for some reason” He looked up at their approach and smiled. “Nash! Glad to see you made it.”

“Just barely” Nash growled. “when you said out of the way, you weren’t kidding were you? I thought I knew these woods like the back of my hand, but I never would have found this place without directions” he said shaking the other man’s hand.
Continued Here: Part Two

“That’s exactly how we want it” Dom said as he looked at the hostess who was staring up at Nash like she was sitting at the Thanksgiving table and mom just brought the turkey in. “Thank you Tracy. I think there are more customers waiting for you up front”

“Yeah” Tracy said with a blink. “If you need anything at all, just ask for Tracy” she told Nash with a sultry smile. She turned and sashayed back to the front of the bar, all three men watching appreciatively.

“Uh, I need to go check our supply of vodka” John said and turned away. Dom looked at Nash and said, “It must be great being the Alpha male. You guys get all the women.”

“Not all of them” Nash grinned “even a werewolf has to sleep sometime. Listen Dom, before you tell me why you and your brothers asked me out here, I need to get something to eat. What’s good on the menu?”

“We’re Italian he said with a continental shrug. “Everything’s good. But a burger will be fast and good. Fries.?“

“Oh yes. And a good cold beer. What ever you have on draft”

Dom stopped a waitress and asked her to put in the order and bring it to the office in back. “let’s head to the business office where we can talk and you can eat in peace.” He said to Nash, and put a hand on the larger man’s shoulder to guide the way.

They went through a practically invisible door in the back wall next to the kitchen doors. The office was very spacious with a large desk, a conference style table and chairs, a comfortable looking sofa and two end tables with lamps. It wasn’t anything special, but is was clean, except for the stack of papers all over the desk, and was surprisingly quiet after the noise of the band and crowd out in the bar.

Dom gestured for Nash to sit on the sofa and had just sat on the edge of the desk when one of his brothers, Geo, was I think, burst through the door bringing the sound of angry raised voices with him. “We have a problem Dominic. Carl Davis is about to beat the piss out D J because he said Carl’s girlfriend is ugly.”

“Oh crap” Dom said with a long sigh.

“They’re pack aren’t they?” Nash said as he got to his feet. “Do you need some help”

“You are our pack leader. Maybe you can calm them down before things get out of hand.” Dom said as he hurried out the door, followed by Geo. Bringing up the rear Nash whispered to Geo “Is the woman really ugly?”

“Oh dude, she has more hair on her now than Carl does during the full moon” Geo said with a look of pure disbelief on his face.

By the time they got back to the bar the crowd had moved well out of the way of the angry weres facing each other. A few brave, or maybe foolish souls were trying to calm Carl down and pull D J away from him.

“Alright now fellas.” Nash said. “There’s no need for this kind of thing to go on between pack mates”

“This ain’t pack business Nash” Carl was so angry he had let his shields slip and he was giving off an impressive show of power. “You don’t have any reason to get involved in this.” Nash thought DJ was regretting his remark, but did not know how to back out of this without looking too submissive. And looking submissive could cost him some standing in the pack community.

“Anything that involves my pack members involves me Carl” Nash said as he let down his own shields. The air practically vibrated with the power he was giving off.

Before He could say anything else, Nash heard a woman’s voice say “Dominic! Geovanni! Just what in the Hell is going on here? I could feel the power crawl over my skin all the way upstairs” Something about that voice flowed over Nash like the feel of a hot shower after a hard day’s work. It seemed to have a calming effect on the two combatants as well. In fact the whole crowd seemed to relax a bit.

Nash turned to look at the woman who had just emerged from the crowd to frown at the two men still facing each other, and forgot how to breath. Oh my God. She was without a doubt the most beautiful woman he had ever laid eyes on. Speaking of eyes, hers were the most amazing color; a golden yellow/brown like topaz or amber. Wolf eyes, but she didn’t smell like a werewolf. There was something magical about her though. You could feel her power like a soft sigh against your skin. She was tall for a woman if she wasn’t wearing heels. About 5’10” he’d guess. Somehow he was able to drag his eyes away from hers long enough to look down her shapely frame to see that not only was she not wearing heels, she was barefoot.

She walked up to Carl and placing a hand on his arm said, “Now Carl I just got home today. Are you and DJ going to ruin my homecoming? What’s going on here?”

Surprisingly the big man looked embarrassed and said “Aw now Amber DJ hurt my girl’s feelings”

“ David James that was an awful thing to do. You apologize to the lady right now or I’ll make sure Natalie makes you sleep on the sofa tonight.”

DJ gave her a disgruntled look, but to Nash’s amazement he went to the lady in question and said “Hell Nancy. I really am sorry. I guess I’ve had too much to drink. Natalie will lock me out of the house when she finds out.” He turned to Carl “Hey sorry man. I’d better leave”

Nancy grabbed Carl’s hand and told him she wanted to go home. Before they left though, Amber took her other hand and said. “Come by tomorrow Nancy. I’ll treat you to lunch. We can’t have you leaving our place with bad feelings. Please come.”

With a confused look, Nancy replied “Uhm. O.K. I guess” and walked out with Carl.

The waitress who took Nash’s order interrupted to ask “Do you still want this burger?” When his stomach chose that time to let out a loud grumble, Amber grinned and stated “I think that’s a yes Dolores. Here I’ll take it.” Looking at Dom she lifted her eyebrows “In the office?” Dom shook his head yes and they headed back into the office.

“Who the Hell is she” I whispered to Geo on the way back.

“That’s Amber. She’s our baby sister, the youngest and the only girl. Mom had six boys before she finally got her girl”

All I could think was Oh crap.

Thanks Antonio. My Nonna used to tell us stories about the Strega. I looked it up and found some interesting legends and myths, including shapeshifting. It was fun, but as they say, I won’t quit my day job.

I love that there are Italians in the story! I was mighty interested in Tracy until Amber showed up. Hoo Yeah! I like that your writing from a male perspective. It’s a nice change…
