Marsha-Incantata-3

The last four days had been very busy for Nash. His normally peaceful little section of Sonoma County had suddenly been plagued by a rash of calls about everything from nuisance calls about loud music and Big Foot sightings to more serious problems like slaughtered goats and assault and battery. If he wasn’t a werewolf he’d blame it all on the coming full moon. It finally looked like he was going to have enough of a break to get out the La Luna and grab some lunch while he talks to Dom. With a little luck he might be able to talk to the delicious witch who had been haunting his dreams. He wondered how she’d feel if she knew she had been going to bed with him every night? Damn. Now might not be the best time to think about that.
The luscious Tracy must not work day shift because there was a different woman took him into the office this time. Cute. But she didn’t have sherry colored eyes. And suddenly there she was looking over her brother’s shoulder at the desk. She looked up at him and gave him a smile that could light up a stadium.

“Nashoba! It’s so good to see you again. Couldn’t resist Rita’s cooking huh” She walked over and gave me a hug. I hugged her back. She smelled so good and felt even better.

“The cooking is part of the reason I’m here” Nash told her as he reluctantly let her go. “I also wanted to see if you really were as beautiful as I remembered” Grinning as she laughed and raised one perfect eyebrow “What? It’s the truth, and you are every bit as beautiful as I remembered.”

“Oh good Lord. I’m beginning to understand why you’ve “dated” at least half the women at this bar.”

“Hey! Who have you been talking to? That is not true! At least not completely true” Nash tried to frown, but just couldn’t when he was looking into those gorgeous eyes sparkling with a teasing light.

“That was quite a pretty compliment, Sheriff. Now what would you like to eat and I’ll go order it for you since I think it was actually my bother you came to see.”

“Surprise me. There isn’t much that’s edible that I turn down. Thanks Amber.” He watched appreciatively as she nodded and walked out the door with an innocently seductive walk. Innocently seductive, somehow that oxymoron made sense.

“Uh hum” at the loud clearing of a throat Nash turned surprised eyes to the older man giving him that “not with my sister you don’t look” Nash managed to look sheepish, not an easy task for an alpha werewolf. “Well she is beautiful you know”

“We know” Dom smiled. “Have you been able to find out anything about the man that hired the attorney who visited me?

“As you know Mr. Randolf works for Blake, Nelson & Randolf in San Francisco. They are pretty exclusive and pretty arrogant in my opinion.. They not only wouldn’t talk to me on the phone, they wouldn’t give me an appointment’’ Nash said with a wry smile. “That is not unless I wanted to pay $250.00 an hour with absolutely no chance that they will discuss any of their dealings with any other client”

“Then it’s a dead end.”

“Not necessarily. I am getting one of my most trusted pack members to follow Mr. Randolf. Very discreetly of course. I’ll tell you Dom, I’m pretty sure our man’s not a werewolf. We haven’t had many new members in our pack in the past four years, and the ones who have joined don’t have the money to keep that kind of firm on retainer. We’ll find something out soon. Nothing’s happened around here has it?”

“No nothing really. There are times when we get the feeling that someone is watching us, waiting for an opportunity. But nothing concrete. I hate to ask you this Nash, but Amber is wanting to go into Occidental to do a little shopping. None of us is Giovani and I are the only two here right now and neither of us can get away right now. Amber is chafing at the bit to get out for awhile. Is there anyway you can take her with you? I know it’s a lot to ask”

“Sure. She can ride in with me. I’ll have to be in town for a couple of hours to check out a few complaints. Will it be alright if it’s after dinner when we get back?

“That’s fine. Thanks Nash. I just don’t feel right letting Amber be out alone right now. She doesn’t agree of course.” Dominic added with a smile.

A waitress named Melissa came in just them with an incredible smelling tray that turned out to be homemade cheese manicotti covered in bolognaise sauce with garlic bread and iced tea. Nash dug in with relish. It tasted as good as it smelled too. Good thing werewolves have very fast metabolisms he thought.

He was just wiping up the last of that glorious sauce with the garlic bread when Amber stuck her head in. “Did I do good? She asked Nash with a dazzling grin.

“Oh yes mam. You can feed me anytime you’d you like. Dom mentioned that you were planning to go into Occidental. I’m headed there for business myself. How about we go together and I’ll drop you off later this evening? Maybe you guys will feed me again” He said with of a grin of his own.

She laughed “I like a man with a healthy appetite, and you definitely have one. I’d really appreciate the lift into town, and the company too.”

Was she blushing? Sure looked like it to him.” Well let’s head on out then. Dom I’ll get back to you as soon as possible with that information we were discussing. If I don’t see you before, I’ll see you and your brothers Thursday on the full moon I’m sure.”

“Absolutely. You too have a good time. Amber if you don’t find what you are looking for today, perhaps Nicolo can drive you down to San Francisco tomorrow. You can stay over and really make a trip of it as long as you‘re both back before the full moon.”

“Now your trying to get rid of me” she teased “you need to make your mind up. I hope it’s because you have some lovely lady coming over for a wicked night of sin big brother. Don’t look so shocked. Do you think I believe all my gorgeous brothers are monks?” Staring at her oldest brother’s shocked expressions she turned to Nash and said “I think we’d best leave now Nash before he swallows his tongue.”

When they were on the way in the Sonoma County Sheriffs Department Jeep, Nash turned to the beautiful young woman, maybe he should say beautiful young witch, and said “I’ve noticed that on the last few time I’ve seen you haven’t been the little chatterbox I met earlier. What’s up with that?”

“Oh gosh. I’m surprised you didn’t put a muzzle on me that night. I’m sorry. It’s just that I used to be that gabby little girl before my brothers sent me to Florence to learn my craft, and no doubt to give me time to get over the loss of our parents. I wanted my brothers to know I’m alright, so I thought I‘d try to be that girl again for them. I probably went a bit too far didn’t I?”

Nash was spared a reply by the crackle of the radio. Sarah, the County dispatch said “Nash do you copy?”

“I’m here Sarah. What’s up?”

“Mike Witmoor wants someone to go by his place to check out the carcass of one of his sheep. He says this is the third one that he’s found and he wants it to stop.”

“Copy that Sarah, I’m only about ten minutes away. I’ll stop by on my way to Occidental. I’m sorry Amber We’ll have to make a quick stop on the way”

“Don’t apologize. I know you are on duty.”

As he pulled up to the Witmoor house he told Amber “Just stay in the Jeep. I hope this won’t take long” Seeing Mike in a field to the left of the house he headed that way.

As soon as he was within hearing distance Mike Witmoor started going off. “You know I’ve never had a problem with you and your pack Nash. But this is the third sheep I’ve lost in the past week. If you’ve got some rouge werewolf running around you damn sure better take are of it fast. I’m not the only one who’s losing livestock around here. The MacElroy’s have lost a couple of goats, and old man Jackson had a cow killed not long ago”

“Now Mike there’s no reason to think this is a werewolf. I keep a tight rein on our pack. If any of them kill livestock for the fun of it they are kicked out of the pack immediately. Lone wolves don’t fair too well and none of our pack is likely to take that risk. Beside weres prefer to hunt their prey, and the deer are plentiful this year. The damage here looks more like a big cat to me.”

“I only know of one person in the area who can shift into a cat” said a familiar voice from just behind him” and she won’t even eat her steaks rare. Yuck. That is really icky”

“Amber I told you to stay in the Jeep.” With a irritated sigh he introduced her to Mike “This is one of your neighbors, Amber di Rossi, the Biagetti brother’s sister.”

“Holy Hell! You’re that cute little girl that used to ride horses with my niece Carolyn. Damned if you didn’t grow up to be a beauty.” He looked from Amber to Nash and back again. “Bet your brothers are going to have their hands full until they get you married off. You‘re not married are you” When she shook her head no, He smiled at Nash.

“Uh, we need to be getting on into town Mike. I’ll have patrols come by this way during the night for awhile. Don’t try and confront whatever is doing this yourself if it comes back. Call me anytime, please. I don’t want anyone getting hurt until we find out what’s doing this.”

“I’ll call you, but I’m keeping my shotgun loaded Nash. I can’t afford to loose many more sheep.”

When they were back in the Jeep and heading toward town again Amber asked “What in the world is going on Nash? That sheep wasn’t killed for food, so it isn’t likely to be a natural predator.”

“No. I don’t think it is either. I don’t know what’s going on yet, but if I don’t find out soon the locals are going to start worrying about the pack and whether they want us around here. The fact that the sheriff is a werewolf too will not help matters. I need to find out what’s happening fast before this gets out of hand.”

Hi Marsha! I’m loving your story. I don’t think you should worry too much about trying to make it short. Who knows, maybe you’re going to write a romance novel? Why not? You’ve got some great characters!

Just curious if you’re from California?… you’ve mentioned Tahoe (one of my absolute favorite places) and Sonoma county.

For now, to bed. Tomorrow, cantata part 4 :-).

I lived in Northern California for over 21 years, had to leave when my dad became ill. Going to the big, Basque style dinners at the Hotel in Occidental was a special treat for my family. It was the most adorable old fashioned mountain town back then. I hop it still is.

Marsha I just had the pleasure of reading this all over again! I really like it. Cheese manicotti, yum! Ahem. Back to the story, lol. Amber is a fascinating woman, er, character. I have to know where it’s going. And just tell the FBI for me that you’re too busy creating great stories to deal with their stuff! 😉

Phil that’s really nice. LOL If I tell them that they just might tell me they have a nice little cell that I can occupy and write as much as I want to as long as it’s with crayons and paper, no pointy items and no electronics you know. I have some ideas that I need to put to paper, but frankly you guys are the only people reading it! Does it ramble on too long? I’m not chatty in real life you know.

I like that your writing from the male perspective…most romance stories do not…from my perspective, as a reader, I “usually” get an eyeful of the male form, so it’s very nice to have the tables turned! I was watching her walk out the kitchen door myself! (LOL) 😉

    • February 15, 2010 at 5:00 pm

Thank you Antonio. Having never been a guy I hope I’m getting this right. My job has traditionally been male oriented and I’ve learned alot from observing them. I’m trying to get my two into a “compromising position” for you as soon as possible. 🙂

I need to find out what’s going to happen, too! Nash has his hands full and not just with the pretty witch. This is a terrific story, Marsha. You not only whet my appetite for more, but for some cheese manicotti with bolognese sauce and garlic bread! Lol. I love where Amber is seductively innocent and when she shocks her brothers with some racy banter. Looking forward to more! 😀

Thank you Phil. I need to remember that this a SHORT story though. I don’t know why they turn out to be so long. Too much description? I am sitting down with my tea and tast and planing on catching up with things at the Blue Parrot now.
