Marsha-Incantata 4

Three hours later Nash was finished with his business and was waiting for Amber on a bench outside of a small boutique and watching the rapidly setting sun paint the town in shadows topped with brilliant shades of pink and orange. A jingle of bells preceded her and he rose to help her with her packages. He was surprised to find she only had a few bags.

“That’s a pretty small stash for three hours of shopping.” he said with a smile, taking the larger packages. “Didn’t find what you wanted?”

“No. I just bought some basics. Looks like I’ll be heading to San Francisco after all. I hope you haven’t been waiting long”

“Just a few minutes. Would you like to grab a bite before we head back? It’s my turn to treat you for a change.”

“I’m not too hungry, but I’d love a cup of coffee and something sweet.”

A few minutes later they were sitting down at a table in a friendly little coffee shop that smelled of cinnamon and coffee. The middle aged woman behind the counter knew Nash by name and hugged him around the neck when she brought two steaming cups of cappuccino and something decadent that was still warm from the oven and drizzled with caramel sauce. “Nice to see your taste is improving hon” she told Nash, and with a wink she addressed Amber. ‘If you need anything sweetie you just yell”

“Oh my God this is wonderful” Amber said around a mouthful of apple cake full of brown sugar and pecans. “Oh, and thank you”

They ate in companionable silence for a few minutes until Nash broke the silence “So what does one get a beautiful witch for her birthday when she already has everything?”

Acknowledging the compliment with a smile and a nod of her head Amber replied “To paraphrase someone I know; surprise me. There isn’t much that comes wrapped in pretty paper that I don’t like” She pushed the rest of her cake toward him and rested her head on her hands to watch him finish it. “You do have a healthy appetite sheriff. In more ways than one according the ladies at La Lupa. When he nearly choked on his coffee she laughed out loud. “Oh the look on your face is priceless Nash. Maybe we can continue this conversation on the way back? It’s dark and I’d better get home before my brothers come gunning for you, but I really do want to hear more about your appetites.”

Back on the sidewalk heading to the Jeep Nash practically growled “You can’t believe everything some old girlfriend says about me you know”

She grinned, she just couldn’t help it he looked so out of sorts. Linking her arm in his she leaned toward him and said “Girlfriends Nash, there are so many of them. Personally I hope what they say is true becau…

They barely had time to sense the supernatural presence before Nash was pushed hard enough to hit the brick of the building they were passing. Someone or something grabbed Amber’s free arm and tried to drag her off. Her arm was still linked with Nash, and she was pulled with him when he fell causing the assailant to loose its grip. She screamed as she fell with Nash, and just that fast there wasn’t another soul in sight anywhere on the street.

“Oh my God Amber! Are you alright?”

“Yes, yes I’m fine. What in the hell was that?”

“I don‘t know. But nothing human can move that fast” Nash’s face was absolutely frightening as he looked at her, “Damn it you aren’t alright your bleeding” They both looked at the deep scratches on her right forearm that were starting to drip onto the sidewalk. “I’m taking you to a hospital.”

“No. Please just take me home. They’re only scratches. They sting like hell but I’m OK. Really, Nash I am. Please.” She looked like she was ready to cry and he knew he was going to give in to anything she wanted. Digging through the scattered packages he found a scarf and wrapped it around her arm.

“Hey! That’s a new silk scarf!”

She was so indignant he had to smile. “Don’t push your luck babe”

#############################

Four very pissed off werewolves were lined up with their arms crossed while they glared at Nash like he personally had injured their little sister. It just added to the guilt he was already feeling, someone had almost grabbed her right out from under his nose, literally.

Amber wasn’t helping matters by arguing with them. “Yes I am going to San Francisco, and yes I am staying over. I already have the rooms reserved. If Rico won’t take me I’ll go alone.” She could glare just as well as her brothers. As she finished rubbing some smelly paste into the four long scratches on her forearm she said “See. I told you the salve would take care of it. They will be completely gone and there won’t even be a mark by my night of my birthday party. I can’t believe you are wanting to pin me up in the house or up here just because some mugger saw an easy chance to grab some packages while we were walking down the street.”

“For God’s sake Amber you were walking next to a 6’ 4” man in a sheriff’s uniform! No ordinary mugger is going to be that stupid.” This from one of the twins, Alessandro. “Cara we are just worried about you. We heard that you were being followed in Tuscany, and now it appears that it’s continuing here at home. Please be reasonable and stay here where we can all keep an eye on you”

“No! I will not be a prisoner in my own home. I think you are all being ridiculous. I am going to go shopping even if I have to go alone.” She repeated with just as much attitude as her brother.

Standing up from the sofa where he had been sitting next to Amber Nash stated in a tone that let you know he was the Alpha “You’re not going alone Amber. I’m taking you, and if this son of a bitch comes near you again I’m going to rip his throat out”

Nice job Marsha! I love the moment where Amber makes Nash nearly choke on his coffee 🙂 These guys keep underestimating Amber, don’t they 😉 Can’t wait to read more!

I’m always hungry, too, Marsha, when I read this story. Hungry for more, that is! It’s riveting! Amber is more than a match for Nash and they have obvious chemistry. Btw, I noticed your comment to Aheila that you’re thinking Antonio and I like this story because of the male pov. Actually, I like your story for so many other reasons. It’s gripping, beautifully descriptive, has fun characters and is filled with suspense, romance and sexual tension. Have I left out anything? Oh, as Antonio said, love your delicious food descriptions! Keep those coming. Please. 🙂

Thank you Phil. I think I may finaly be able to get the two together in SF. Should make Antonio happy. Although don’t expect my descriptions to be quite as “invigorating” as his. My memory is not that good these days. 😀

Ooooo! I think this might be the best one, Marsha. Action and romance in equal measures, and you always make me hungry with some food description! Damn, I’m trying to lose some weight, girl. 😉

I’m trying to get the two alone for you Antonio. Looks like the next chapter should do it. Now if I can just remember…
