PALE DEMON: I’m glad i took a night to sleep on it, think about it a bit…

First: I was VERY entertained by it. I read it in 3 days…and that was only because i had things i had to do(laugh) and couldn’t read it any quicker. It was fun…a page turner…surprisingly, the book didn’t ‘take off’ for me until the road trip was over, and they finally arrived in San Francisco. Unlike the lovely Marsha, i loved all the EverAfter/Al/Demon stuff! I wanted to see Rachel settle in and shake up Demon society–and recreate Rynn Cormel’s White House pool(big laugh), bond with Newt, find a way to alleviate their problems…

IVY: I loved that Ivy dumped Rachel(grin)…well, not exactly dumped her(laugh)but stand up and say she was moving on. It was sad, but i was so proud of her, that she’s grown so much and was looking forward to a happy future(for a vampire, anyway) and that she acknowledged and thanked Rachel for getting her to that place. By the end of the book, however, i couldn’t figure out where they stood with each other, but they appeared to be good(i think?). There was still some of the irritating ticks between the two women: Rachel ‘jumping’ when touched by Ivy, pulling out of embraces, shrugging off her touch, embarrassed about falling asleep next to her, yet getting ‘shivers’ from her prescence, emotions. I still wish they would speak to each other more directly/frankly, but that’s me. I still don’t get the ‘bending’ explanation of why they don’t share blood/auras(“I would lose what i love about her and she would lose what she loves about me”), but hey–it’s Rachel’s reason and she’s been consistent on that for a few books now. All in all, i really liked Ivy in this one…i would have liked more(grin!), but i always feel that way.

Trent: OK–Just let me say it: None of the logic underpinnings to this story made ANY sense. It’s crazy that i loved the book so much when nothing–and i mean nothing–made any logical sense. The entire book seemed to me a love letter to romance readers…humanizing a villian beyond ALL reason. Making up for the death of Kisten maybe? Every bad thing that happened to anybody in this book–EVERYTHING!–can all be attributed directly to decisions/actions that TRENT made. Every nice thing that Trent did(thankfully!) had to be done to clean up some evil that he started. And yet NOBODY held him responsible! No recriminations…no charges…no arrest…no bad press,or public recriminations…no lawsuits. Incredible! At one point, when Vivian and Oliver, and the I.S. Vamp Agent, all hear about Trent letting loose the most powerful Demon because he wanted Rachel to look good capturing him because of his fear that the Coven would imprison Rachel, Vivian turns to Oliver and says “This is ALL your fault!” and punches him unconscious!? I went “yaaaaay!” with everyone else(he really DID need to be punched*grin), but honestly–it was Trent’s misguided fault. Hundreds(thousands?) were injured, or killed. I swear the Elf is made of Teflon! The Teflon Elf! Nothing affects him. And he never shows any remorse either! Thousands died, and NOBODY BLAMES HIM!? Amazing! The answer to the question “How can I make a handsome villian sympathetic to all recriminations” is: PUT A BABY IN HIS ARMS! I think the man could have put her in one of those backpack baby-carriers and walked around Cincinnati punching grandmothers and kicking puppies and people would have “awwwwwwww’d” all over him.

Lady#1: “Look at that beautiful man and that daaaaaaarling elf baby.”
Lady#2: “Awwwwwwww, look at her little ears. Hey, is he strangling that shopkeeper?”
Lady#1: “I’m sure she deserved it.”

Ivy, is held and tortured for 3 days(She’s used to being tortured by Piscarry, no big woop)

Pierce protects Rachel(and Trent and Vivian) by taking the blame for Rachel’s supposed death and bears the rath of Al(Oh, i hope he’s all right, let’s go to Disneyland!)

Trust. Trust is the ‘buzz word’ here. Huh?

A sexy, powerful man with a baby is lonely. He’s vulnerable!

    Romance? Ooooooooooo.

I love the character, don’t get me wrong. But, is the man EVER going to be held responsible for the things he’s done? The choices he makes? I thought for sure that there would be an explanation that would get him off the hook for these things…maybe the Withons(spelling?) had mistakenly called Ku’Sox to stop Trent on his quest and he was tasked with stopping him? Maybe Sylvan(from the novella Bound) had tricked somebody into freeing him? I don’t know–something, anything that would shove the blame onto somebody else. Not to mention the ‘baby-stealing Elf quest’ that injured and killed innocents.

The fan/customer reviews are through the roof! I feel like a tiny little boy standing alone in front of a huge oncoming wave(laugh)…so, there is no reason to stand in front of it and take the abuse, or point out that ‘the elf is wearing no clothes’ so to speak. A sexy bad-boy with an infant is a hard thing to battle(grin).

Still–LOVED it! I really did. Makes no sense, but there it is. 😆

Guys I think I expected to like this book much more than this. I don’t like Trent. Ivy’s scene with Rachel hurt. I’m not crazy about the Ever After and the demons. I need some comedy, or at least a more rewarding relationship. *shrug*

In the chapter at the airport, Rachel and Jenks give Ivy a theme song for her walk(grin). It’s CAKE’s song Short Skirt/Long Jacket. While that’s a really good song, it feels like a ‘daytime’ song to me. How about the first minute and a half of this song—an oldie, but goodie, Led Zeppellin’s ‘When the Levee Breaks.’

    Chapter Four of Pale Demon:

(groan)I don’t know if i can take a whole book of this. For me, Trent is a great character…in small doses. Rachel’s reactions to him are even more annoying than her reactions to Ivy.(sigh) That’s not to say I’m not ‘hooked’ becasue i am–I do want to find out where this is headed…but, i don’t care for the Rachel/Trent thing at all. She should have slept with him a few books back and got it totally out of her system. I hate that she constantly judges herself in relation to him. Blech! As a man, i’m just not into the sexy bad boy thing, or the total opposites getting along and growing thing…oh well, we’ll see where this is going…

Walking in the door from a long day at work, Jenn drops her lunch bag, purse & sweater. After hanging her coat up, she heads off to change into her comfy clothing. Coming down the stairs, she heads for the front door to check the mail. Eyes, going big she sees a white padded envelope. Turning it over, she she’s it’s for her from Mud. Only one thing that it could be! After carefully storing Mud’s contact info, Jenn ripped open the envelope. Shiny! Bubble envelope!!! *pop, pop, pop* After opening the book & seeing the instructions, she dashes into her office to follow the directions. Upon completing the rules, Jenn pushes back from her desk, grabs a snack & heads off to read.

    Thanks Mud!

    ***Spoilers***Chapter 3–Pale Demon***

Still very entertained(grin). I’ve been at the Hollows Airport by the way(Cincinnati’s airport is actually just over the border in Kentucky…The Hollows and Rachel’s church is actually on the Kentucky side of the river, not Ohio). Reading/Reviewing a chapter at a time(and trying to stay away from spoiler pages–i took a peek at one on amazon and unfortunately saw a BIG one) means i don’t know ‘exactly’ what is going on, so i’m trying to think it through…

1)Trent is one of the wealthiest people in the world, so i’m still having trouble completely understanding his lack of bodyguards or his trouble in travelling. Unfortunately, because of my peek at Amazon’s spoiler page, i’m not completely in the dark about his secrecy in travel plans, but i still don’t quite get why he doesn’t hire his own private airplane/pilot…? He can afford to hire witches to hide his tracks w/magic. There’s gotta be a better way than driving across the country with a witch, vampire, and pixy. Maybe there are compelling reasons that will be explained later…?

2)Fame. If you know me, then you know i’ve always been curious as to why Rachel(and Ivy, Jenks, Rynn Cormel, Trent, for that matter) doesn’t have to deal with fame, fans(and detractors), the press–both local and national. We know from the books that the tabloids follow her, and if you read BMS then you know she(and Trent) is famous(infamous) nationally. Heck, the former vampire president who helped guide the nation after the turn relocated to Cinci and has made known that he has granted her protection. I like that one of the TSA knows and supports Rachel…at least her fame is ‘somewhat’ acknowledged. But, still, she should have autograph seekers approaching her, photographers trailing her, citizens taking cell phone pics…something. I wonder if she’ll have to acquire a disguise to make it across the country unnoticed. We’ll see…(grin)

      1) There is a very cool reason why he’s doing what he’s doing. The explination is very logical, as well. But you don’t get to it for a loooong time.

      2) Yeah, the lack of Rachel paparatiz is interesting.

    ***Spoilers***Chapter1&2***Spoilers***Chapter 1 & 2…

While reading the first 2 chapters posted on KH’s website, I had a few moments where i either rolled my eyes or just didn’t believe what was happening. However, it’s always easier to find things, at least initially, that don’t make sense, so instead I tried to look at the things that troubled me a bit and try to come up w/viable answers for the character’s behavior, or lack thereof…

    1) Trent drives over to Rachel’s without a driver or a bodyguard. He explained that Quen was back home w/Ceri, but still it seemed kind of ridiculous, at first glance, that one of the most powerful politicians/businessmen/underworld figures would be driving around without protection. ANSWER: maybe his visit to the church was about something so secretive that he felt–maybe irrationally, that he couldn’t risk anyone, even an employee, overhearing about it.

    2) Rachel says she has been without a paintball gun for over 2 months because Al broke the last one and nobody else would sell her one. This seems silly for a number of reasons: a)Why would she even ‘want’ to replace it when it has failed her so often? b)come on, somebody(Ivy,David,Pierce, etc) couldn’t chase one down for her? c)If Pierce and Lee and Vivian can use magic to defend themselves, surely Rachel should know how by now. ANSWER: Maybe, fearful of reprisals by the I.S. or the Witches Coven for Moral and Ethical affairs, she was afraid someone could obtain a warrant and search her church/residence and somehow get her in trouble for owning a ‘weapon’…? We know Ivy did chase one(or two?) down for her in time for the trip…maybe they planned to wait until the last minute before obtaining one(or two).

    3) Rachel–without any kind of weapon–chases down an armed man, confronting him and disabling him with fisticuffs(fisticuffs is a ‘fun’ word to say*grin). C’mon! She doesn’t just tap into her church’s leyline and use magic to stop him? She doesn’t know ‘ANY’ magic that could do the trick without endangering herself? ANSWER: Maybe she was fearful that, again, it could be the Witches or the I.S. trying to entrap her, so she thought it was better not to use magic…?

OK, those are my thoughts…Still, make no mistake–VERY entertaining, right? 😎

  10. November 27, 2010 at 4:27 pm

Just got back from the handoff coffee with Suzanne and the adorable Tot! Needless to say, I’m going into virtual “do not disturb” mode! I finally ordered the drink Al introduced Rachel to in honor of the occasion! Really good! 🙂

Okay, I’m on an exclamation point spree, so I’m just gonna go read now! 😀

Just finished reading! Wow. So many developments, beginnings, possibilities… Oooh – I don’t know what to say without giving something away! (But I’ll have to work on that for my review.)

It’s off to Kylie on Monday. 🙂

Let’s hope the PD ARC has a pleasant trip and that stern stepfathers will allow their stepdaughters to accept and read it. 😉
