Beacons of Light

To my friend Alyssa, whose story inspired this one, about shining enough light to help your friends. Happy Birthday!

Alyssa spread her strong and sleek wings and rose into the sky of a brand new night. Confidanty, she surveyed the ground below for signs of movement. The chill in the air made her wings stiff, but pressing firmly against the windcurrents, Alyssa reveled in the sensation of fighting off the cold night air with the movement of her wings. Treetops and the peaks of roofs slid by, and Alyssa scanned them one by one.

The night grew darker, but the waning light only increased Alyssa’s sensitivity to sound and movement. She was sure this was the approximate location. Circling around, she waited.

Suddenly a light burst though the trees in the darkness of the woods below. Shadows scattered away, searching out sone other part of the forest, as if a pulse of lightning had been ignited far below. It was a strange otherworldly light, but suddenly Alyssa could see for miles. Guiding herself towards the beacon that had been lit, she noticed that she didn’t need to rely on her bat sonar as heavily with the brilliant hues illuminating the forest floor. Landing into a crouch she touched the earth with her right hand. Balanced. She stood up, folding her capable wings behind her back gracefully.

Three figures stood together surrounded by light.
