Binary Magic – Part One

In the darkness of the still pre-dawn hours a blue haired witch lay curled up under a mass of down blankets and quilts, oblivious to the chill in the damp morning air as she dreamed of numbers dancing in odd looking patterns. This was the eleventh morning she’d been back, comfortable in her own bed since facing the inquiry at the Technocracy Headquarters in Montreal. It had been an exhausting week, but she proudly impressed her superiors with news of her team’s progress. She was frequently called on as an expert in Binary Magic, an obscure branch of magic used to power and protect the flow of data between computers – and although little known, most people deal with Binary Magic every day and simply know it as “the internet”, unaware of the magical power and upkeep involved in such an ambitious project. A bright pink kitten snuggled in the crook of the witch’s curled up legs, and purred contentedly to the rhythm of soft steady snores. Just as a tiny pink paw stretched out comfortably, the loud ring of a cell phone broke through the fuzzy peace.

“Baby, its cold outside…” crooned her ring tone.

“Mmmmm” murmured the witch as she buried her face deeper into her fluffy pillow.

“I’ve got to go away – Baby, its cold out there” demanded the cell phone a second time.

Coming to alert attention, the witch jerked upright and snapped the phone open, listening.

“State your name and password” said a deep male voice on the other end of the line.

“Aheila. One zero zero one zero one” she replied.

“We have an emergency. The ninja hacker known as Kylie Ru has stolen sensitive data packets from a secured circuit – we’ve lost a file transfer originating from a University in Wisconsin”.

“I’m on it” Aheila said, standing up and ignoring the cold.

“One more thing, Aheila” said the caller, suddenly with a more personal touch, “Be careful out there. The witch this data was stolen from can be very unpredictable – she’s angry and threatening to get involved in the search and rescue. Her name is Professor Mud and she teaches…” the tremble in the man’s strong voice was palpable, “Herbal Necromancy.”

“Thanks Antonio, I’m always careful”. A brief shudder passed over the blue haired witch as she hung up the phone, but she quickly brushed it off. It was always dangerous to retrieve lost data packets from magical hackers, nothing new.

She was almost ready by the end of the call. Emergencies like this one had taught her to be prepared. Picking up her wand and tucking the pink kitten into a fleece lined pocket, her feet rapidly pounded down the stairs and out the door.

Her steel gray sports car peeled out of the driveway, accelerating at the limits of its power and flattening her back to the leather seat. The traffic light ahead flicked to yellow, but she kept her foot firmly down as she sped through the intersection, swerving to narrowly but skillfully dodge the cars that started out from the opposite direction. As her car topped 160 kilometers per hour, she pressed a button on her dashboard to alert her office that she would need her plane charmed for speed and ready for takeoff.

“Bonjour Aheila” said a pleasant female voice.

“Bonjour Jenn” she replied as she steered into a hard corner and narrowly avoided sideswiping a taxi.

“Where to this morning?” Jenn asked, barely audible over the wail of honking.

Ignoring a rude gesture from the taxi driver, she briefed Jenn on her mission.

I LOVE it! That’s actually a really cool set-up for a story…when you think about a supernatural tale of witchcraft, you know some interprising bad dudes would figure out ways to cause trouble and mayhem through technology…You know what? If i were to call Aheila, I absolutely would sing that to her! 😉

    • April 30, 2010 at 2:13 pm

Thanks Tony!! At first this was going to be a day in the life of Aheila, but as a witch and with a few funny refrences… but after making some notes on the details of Binary Magic, all the ideas got bigger. This character is having fun, so I hope I can keep her active with keeping technological mayhem at bay! 🙂

PS – Good to know about the song… I’ll make sure to be convieniently near some karaoke when I have a beer with you one day 😉 LOL

Oh Tiffany, I can’t wait to read your book whn it is published 🙂 I love this story and the fact that the NaSty group is a part of it. Really good way to celebrate Aheila’s birthday.

😀 Thanks Marsha!! Your encouragement is like plant food to my little roots, so thanks – it means a lot. It was fun to write you guys into the story. It’s kind of funny, like we’re mutually developing a base of fictional characters out of a mash up of real and fictional things about ourselves. I’m going to TRY to tie this story into another NaSty story out there…to see if I can make the two stories briefly intersect! *grin*

And there’ll be more! Yay! Now I can tackle today’s hard work with an unwavering smile! 😉
    Thanks hon!

Excellent! I’m gald it made you smile 🙂 My original idea of this character has some humorous and lovable quirks, but the James Bond-ish girl wanted to come out and play right away! I’ll find out this weekend, when I work on part two, how quirky she wants to be. 🙂
